Love the response from Afrihost tech support. Basically saying: It's not our problem.

Here is their response:

"Trust you are well :)

Apologies for the late response in regards to your slow access.

According to the trace route, the 1st five hops that are connected are on our local network, meaning that it would would have a low ping or response time from the server as it is cached on your internal network, plus when it leaves our network, we don't have control over that response time from the server, to make you understand this better, please read the article I have attached.

So I migrated to Afrihost this week and its not looking good.
I logged a ticket about the slow speeds I'm getting every night and after 24 hours still no reply to my ticket.
I am on 100/25 package.

Anyone else getting slow speeds at night CPT?

Will say upfront, that my experience with Afrihost Pure Fibre to date, has been very good....But:

Having Fibre problems as well today.

Downloads have gone from the 190-200Mbps mark, which was standard over the course of the month, to 100Mbps earlier today and now tonight maximum 50Mbps.

Doubt it's the router, nothing has changed. The Speedtest starts off strong on 170-190 and then drops down to 50Mbps very fast. Uploads are still at 90+Mbps.

Gotta be honest, based on the time of the month and the time of day that I was affected, it smells of throttling/shaping. I was under the impression that the 200Mbps Pure Fibre was not Shaped or Capped?

Anyone else having this problem?

My speeds were also fine about 2 days ago, slow speeds started yesterday night, during the day it’s fine. Speed drop seems to start around 19:00.

Not sure about the whole throttling/shaping scenario as I only started using Afrihost since Friday.

If it is a problem in the area, which I doubt, cause I'm in Centurion and your in Cape Town. Then at least notify people. So I will give it till tomorrow to see if they notify us of a problem on the general network.

But I gotta say, everything points to shaping here. Which is simply put, dishonest. I sincerely hope I am wrong.

Just did a speed test now and both ping and download speed is fine now,

I hope it was an temporary issue and not a issue that will exist every night between 19:00 and 23:00.

@AfriMan - any word on a price adjustment for the 200/200 package on Octotel?

I've grown quite fond of 200/200 during my free months, however come next month I need to decide on a package to start paying for. There's a massive price jump between 200/25 and 200/200 - unfortunately I need the upload speed, so my only option really is to downgrade to 100/100 to keep the upload above 25mbps.

Every other provider there's only a R100 jump from 25mbps upload to at least 100.

I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but Octotel in Cape Town is renowned for having horrible congestion and packet loss during peak times.

They don't really care about fixing it too much and the best thing to do would be to log a ticket with Afrihost with speedtests and MTR's during off-peak and on-peak times to reflect this.

and.............. it's been a month and my migration still ain't complete:rolleyes:

I know that Octotel are looking at some expansion plans and that should also address any possible congestion. However, please log any potential issues with us - we will definitely engage with them to improve each individual client's experience wherever possible.

As far as I am aware we've implemented all the new pricing for all providers, so there are no coming changes that I know of for Octo :(

Sounds like 100/100 is a good option, and saves you a couple of bucks.
