Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

I think we had a chat about this at some point. Your neighbour's usage may affect the network, but your real time service is always preserved. In some instances, like today, we have to fight a little harder to preserve latencies than normal, but in general you always have full realtime service. To my knowledge no other ISP offers this distinction - I could be wrong though. This is the norm with US ISPs and in the EU, according to the experts we consulted when we designed our system.

Leave these dudes and dudettes alone. If they'd researched where Afrihost's priorities were then wouldn't have signed up in the first place.

I chose Afrihost because I wanted constant real time performance and I am getting it. Maybe they should go to an ISP that prioritises HTTP downloads... Think Cybersmart is the only ISP which considers HTTP as real time.

Other than that all the ISP's have load based shaping policies apart from Web Africa with their start rating. Furthermore, Axxess, Cybersmart, OpenWeb as well as Afrihost priorities real time services like streaming etc.

So YouTube and the singing cat prevails almost all the time.

So you agree that all the heavy users have been on the wrong package then?

I hope not, because according to Afrihost's website, their 4Mbps and 10Mbps offerings are recommended for 'downloading' and 'media', which I think most of us can agree that they're not suitable for. Their 2Mbps, 4Mbps and 10Mbps offerings list 'gaming' as a 'recommended use'. Considering that for the past month they've had 400+ms ping to large parts of Europe, including every gaming server/service I use, I can't really say that they're suitable for that either.

You've been going on for a long time, why aren't you discussing this in private. This is not what the thread is meant for.

What is this singing cat? Clearly I've missed the vid of the year somehow ;)

So, if not for Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback, what exactly is an Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback thread meant for? Please enlighten me.

PS. I sent a message to Afriguy many, many hours ago, but he would rather argue that throttling is not throttling than reply to my message.

I agree that this is a realtime service and I love the idea, except how a small number of sign ups could result in such a load, I moved here to see if they where all they promised to be and it seems it failed me. I will wait on their CCU to mail me, presumably only tomorrow

it still seems to set my wife up for a tv with AH wont work, I feel let down, I felt they had a chance to realy impress and they did the exact opposite. I think watching the market some more wont be a bad idea. but I am realy at the point of heartbroken that the best contender got knocked out in round one. I think so many people are hoping as they do not want to go back and they dread they need to, I do to but it seems the only way. I will still need to pay more, but atleast I can manage myself and still get good access instead of bad access from day one

If you're on a product that you feel is not suitable to you, then drop me a PM so we can discuss what is suitable.

In fact, please drop me a PM anyway so we can chat :)

Whichever product fixes the >= 400ms ping to Europe would be suitable. That's my main problem right now. But unfortunately I don't think that's a matter of product.

I'm sorry that you feel we let you down - truly. Every ISP has their challenges, and I think everyone will agree that it's been a great year for Afrihost Uncapped until only recently. And anyone who has been with us will also tell you that the reason we're an award winning ISP is that we take our knocks and then hit back with big benefits for our clients one way or another. That's why we trust our clients to stick by us - we know (hopefully all our clients know as well) that they will always win in the long run with Afrihost and we stand by our clients, even when times are tough.

At lest its cached locally by now so maybe no buffer???

As a matter of fact, youtube is running splendidly :P

I'm seeing sub- 200ms pings to the UK, so I don't if this just happened once, or if you are getting poor performance on your line.

Pings to the US holding at about 280ms - could be better - but very respectable.

Afrihost's draconian throttling has been going on for about a while now; this includes evenings and after mid-night too and now weekends. This is a long weekend as well.

It is still ongoing.

Does Afrihost need more bandwidth itself?

It seems like they are capacity constrained.

i'm also leaving afrihost. my uncapped 10 meg bundle is ridiculously slow. more than any other isp i've used.

I'm really sorry you feel that way. It's not exactly our finest hour right now, but I do believe that we will make sure that we compensate for this in favour of our clients :(

I'm getting a normal ping to some networks in Europe. Unfortunately all the gaming servers/services I use are on networks where your routing gives me >= 400ms ping

Again, notice how it reaches 375ms at the first hop in Europe.

i didn't read the whole thread. what's the problem? i'm a little pissed about the situation, because it's the second time i've signed up, and i talked a whole bunch of people into joining. they all think i'm an idiot now, and i have to facilitate the line going back to telkom and so on. not great.
