Yes that is exchange or DSLAM congestion.
what area?

This thread is uncharacteristically quiet this weekend (barring the 6 or 7 posts today).

Everyone's a happy e-camper?

Do a traceroute when it is slow, I suspect exchange congestion

I dont think my exchange is the problem, i still have my old ISP account (2 mbps) running till the end of the month and it performs alot better than my new AH account does, for instance i cannot stream 480p on AH 4mbps where i can do on my old 2mbps account. Clientzone also says no shaping is applied "100% realtime speed".

Or maybe I was wrong, just saying I didnt have any trouble before moving to afrihost

2nd hop clearly shows exchange or DSLAM congestion.

Ok thanx , im a noob at this stuff. Just weird , the congestion started the moment I upgraded my line from 2 - 4mb.

Ok so we can add LES MARAIS (TLEM02) to the list of congested exchanges. Man this sucks, its like being back on 3g

I have a question regarding QoS. When I'm busy with a torrent download, HTTP browsing really takes a big knock. Sometimes I'm not even able to load Google.com, but normally a refresh fixes this problem. Getting a lot of timeouts etc. Are the QoS not set up so that HTTP traffic is prioritized over torrents? It's really annoying to not be able to browse when you've got a download running in the background.

On 4mbps Uncapped.

Afrigirl/man

I'm thinking of changing my line from telkom to you guys.

The thing is that telkom say my maximum line speed I can get here is 2meg even though I have a 4meg account and my line is syncing at 6meg.:wtf:

Is there any way to check if my line can go up to 10meg?

That all depends on Telkom. If the infrastructure in your area in your area allows it, Telkom usually put you on the highest sync rate. To get 10Mbps usually means there is a fibre component to the exchange, and you can sync on ADSL2 instead of GDMT.

We can try, but impossible to guarantee. If Telkom can't give you a full 4Mbps, chances are it may take some time to get you onto 10Mbps :(

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 6144 kbps 640 kbps
Line Attenuation 23.0 db 12.0 db
Noise Margin 23.4 db 12.0 db

Where do i check if its ADSL2+ or G.DMT?

We'll have to check on Telkom's Broadband services portal, which I can only do if your line is with us.

Afrigirl already helped me out with this.
I can only have 6meg.
Thanks though.

On 4mbps Uncapped.

Yes, in theory it should be the other way around. Downloads should slow down so that real time services get priority. It also depends on how quickly the updates take effect. I'll check with the guys how quickly the QoS should take to kick in.

Qos doesn't work right to the customer router afaik. If you saturate your line with torrents your browsing will suffer.

Best option would actually be to set your own QoS on your router. Most routers have some option or features like this.

My torrent traffic slows significantly when using any real time services. E.g. Watching YouTube slows torrent down, close the video and the torrent goes up again. Same with other services, even freedownloadmanager has priority over utorrent

Hi, I moved from AH last year and now I'm back. There's just one thing bugging me, at night (it's now 11:42PM) my Latency on my 4mbps uncapped is much much higher than on my 1GB free account (Wow ping : 500ms vs 185ms ), the weird thing is that during the day the uncapped latency becomes low again like 185 - 190 ms for WoW. This does not make any sense, is this just temporary or is it actually normal ?

Sorry to read this, we'll definitely need to look into this. Please drop me a PM when you can :)

Doubt that my crappy Telkom DuoPlus router will be able to do that. :P

Should it be like that though? The account is not saturated by torrents like Sinbad mentioned. Only one torrent at a time, +- 350kBps, but yet browsing suffers. :/
