Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

Hi,

I emailed support about a few questions I have a bout Afrihost before deciding to switch, this email was never responded to? Who can I contact if I want some more details, I don't want to phone as I want my questions answered in writing so there canot be any disputes later.
 
Hi Afriman (or anybody else with advice)

I have been trying the Afrihost 4Mbps home uncapped account as well as the Openweb Gold uncapped (shaped) account. When streaming Netflix to my Apple TV the quality is quite poor on the Afrihost account but great on the Openweb Gold account. My undertsanding is that Netflix automatically adjusts the streaming quality based on the quality of the connection.

It was my undertsanding that Afrihost prioritises streaming and this experience came as a surprise. Am I missing something or is just a case of the Openweb Gold account being better? I have contacted support but they just asked for trace routes that I cannot provide as I am using the Apple TV and do not know to which ip it connects to for Netflix streaming.

I really like the transparency of Afrhost and the clientzone but this is a deal breaker for me that I would need to resolve.

Video streaming should get highest priority on Uncapped, and many of our directors and staff use video streaming at home. It's not a general complaint that we get, but seeing as it works on another ISP, we'll definitely look into this.

Dear Afriman

I starting to really like afrihost, cheap and good network, after a long and bad network, but everything is working 99%. I have one problem, I wanna know if Gaming gets the highest priority on your network. Before I was able to download and game online at the same time, and my ping will just increase by not more than 20ms but now it shots up like 500ms....

There's all kinds of stuff happening on Telkom's side. Old GDMT exchanges are being upgraded to ADSL2+, so they should be getting fibre cabling run to the DSLAM and cards should be swapped out at some point. We know which areas are getting full VDSL but no idea how many DSLAMS are being upgraded for now and in which areas this is happening.

This sounds very likely! To that value do you reckon I should set it? (On 120 now).

Is Tollgate (Dbn) getting VDSL? If so, any ideas when?
 
Bwhahaha, got a buddy to join AH. Sucks that the carrot that got him convinced was that I got him on during the R1 month, didn't seem to have any effect on the 50% mutual discount then. :(

Now Telkom and AH just need to get his line transfer sorted from Telkom to AH so he can utilise the bundle benefits.

I've got mine set to Global maximum number of connections 100
Maximum number of connected peers per torrent 25

I fiddle with the settings every now and again, pretending I know what they do.

Tera at least only has small updates once you get past the initial 20Gb

Played with the settings a bit, decreased the number of active connections on a single torrent, and Presto!

Works wonderfully now. Torrents slow down when I'm streaming real-time content, and all is well again. :) Thanks a lot to all involved for your input on this matter!
 
Hi there Afriman/Girl,

If the shaping system says I am shaped to 75% does this mean I should get 75% of the total line capacity available to me for downloads? at the moment I am getting 30.4 kb/s on a Linux system update on a 1meg line.

I also find that 75% thingy confusing ............ 30 is correct for a 1 meg line.

That is why I also have a capped package for my updates.
