Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

Can someone please help me. I currently have 4mbps uncapped. I don't download/p2p much, I hower do a lot of online gaming (Dota2,GW2,LOL etc.). Since the thursday of easter weekend I have been unable to play almost anything on my afrihost uncapped as the pings to EU have been extremely unstable. I use to get a rock solid 271 ms connection, now it jumps between 300 and 600 with a lot of packet loss.

Can anyone tell me what is wrong from below?

Guild wars 2 is the worst of all, it is almost unplayable. I play on the EU Desolation server. The ping is so erratic it jumps from 270 to 450 every second or so. GW2 uses an authentication server in Texas US, so this might be the problem?

When I log into my capped Telkom ADSL line, all these problems disappear. GW2 is still a little bit iffy on the Telkom, but highly playable.

I am not sure what is causing this, can anyone provide me some insight/help?

Thanks a lot!

I can only imagine that, whilst providing a decent enough stop-gap, routing around the still borked EASSy cable is cause of much of the instability we're still seeing.

Any news on EASSy, AfriFolks?

I have had the same experience as you. On friday my latency dropped to 200ms to the UK servers but now I'm back to the 270+ms I had before that.

This is very disappointing really since its my first month and the irregularity is worse than mweb was.

You guys do realize that the EASSy cable is still screwed up right? Everything's going to be a little shaky until that problem is resolved.

Yeah but the whole problem is that how come sometimes we can get good latency and then the other times its so bad we cant really play on EU server?

UPDATE 30 March 2013 18:00 A restoral path has been successfully established on EASSy, allowing engineers to reroute international traffic currently diverted to WACS. While full capacity has not yet fully been restored, this will improve international access and downloads services using overseas services. We apologise to for any inconvenience, our engineers are monitoring the temporary link to ensure that diverted traffic is stable, and the continued impact on clients is minimal. Affected clients will be informed as soon as full international capacity has been restored. We thank you for your patience.

This temp link's latency is retarded.

It is, yes. But it's a helluva lot better than the simple NO INTERTUBEZ FOR YOU we got, what, a year ago every time SEACOM threw a hissy-fit.

True but no ETR is bugging the hell out of me. As a new customer the generic copy+paste replies about having no ETR does not show much promise.

If this was the case they would have had much more urgency on the matter. No update in 8 days, seems like they don't care about latency as long as the usual stuff works... :(

Sure. I remarked on the same utter lack of information earlier in the thread, but also on EASSy's latest news on their own website dating from December 2010. I don't think we're going to see any better flow of information until everything's restored, unfortunately.

Surely Afrihost can apply some pressure from their side to get an update for their consumers on EASSy...

Congestion. You're bandwidth is going through a pipe with very limited capacity at the moment. Until EASSy is fixed, we're gonna have to deal with it mate. :)

Not eassy to repair it seems.

:D

Well least there isn't a 1 month cancellation period like Mweb so if its not sorted by the 25th I can swap to another ISP.

It's not just AfriHost that's affected by this. Just be thankful that they actually have a contingency plan for when crap like this happens. (They use SEACOM as a backup). I believe that AfriHost actually has the least amount of problems with this whole outage, compared to others like Mweb and Cybersmart. ;)

Read up on the issue here:

Thinking about trying Openweb's free offer (see ad at top of page).
