ATI 5850 with Intel Q9550

Silver show me screenie of your 3dmark score please, would like to see you 860 score, i also wanna see your other 2 scores.

I get 20k in 3dmark with my i7 would be interesting to see your 860 score :D.

Ya make the trip to cerebus tonight dude, could just be your PSU which you should replace anyhow even if it is not the psu. Seems with your system you are living on the edge of that power supplies capability :D.

I'll post my totally stock run on the bot later today/tomorrow/Monday (Most likely on Monday as i'm going to be busy)

UPDATE

kk so im at cerebus right now... tried the 800w PSU and guess what..

FACK ALL! Still the same slow business... :wtf:

So we decided to overclock the CPU, which I didnt have much luck with last time. Busy posting this at 3.3ghz and it seems stable... Ran 3dmark and this is what I got.

Bear in mind that Brawler had a 3.4ghz CPU and he got 18500..

So for all who thought it was NOT the CPU... LOL :D

your thoughts?

Much better :D Run prime95 for two hours see if it holds. Otherwise money well saved :)

money well saved? Im not sure if Im going to be able to live with a CPU overclocked 24/7 :)

gonna advertise my stuff tomorrow on gumtree and see if I get any bites... How much do you think I could get for my stuff?

8GB Corsair XMS2 4-4-4-12
Intel Q9550
Asus P5N-D

?

Well, won't speedstep drop the clocks if not being seriously used? My Q8400 used to do that.

You also have a MEAN cpu cooler and if prime 95 can run for 2 hours or so without a hitch you should be fine :D

Not sure how much you will get, especially since it has been overclocked. Maybe R3k?

Why do you want to sell though?

Geez that is awesome dude. That cpu unless your room is very hot will run fine. Leave it overclocked, why buy new stuff?

That cpu scores almost as much as my i7 at 3.0ghz. You would be silly to sell when it is working 100% :D.

you both make valid point... Gonna stress test it tomorrow evening and see what happens. Point is, its still not up to scratch... but at least now I KNOW what the problem is. I can live with that!

Just got back now, and need to sleep! :(

Brawler, do me a favour mate. Your CPU is stock at 3.4ghz, right? You got an unlocked multi so pop it up one notch please. Run 3dmark and far cry again and see what you get...

I think we all in for a surprise here! :D

See if you can do it now quick quick :)

@ killa

take a look at this and tell me if it looks OK? especially the temps, are they OK?

I also recall reading somewhere that when using Prime95 there are some specific settings that you must change to it picks up even the smallest error, think it was rounding or something??

http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/9903/capturefz.jpg

getting more toasty now

http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/4241/capture2jl.jpg

seems they quite high when I run the MAX FPU stress test. When I run a blend the temps are much lower...

Not bad can you drop the cpu voltage a bit?

Dude judging by all this it just seems 3dmark gives crazy amounts of points for slight overclocks. You really wanna go blow 4.5k or whatever on a new rig so 3dmark can give you extra points? :D.

3dmark is good at picking up problems but not the be all and end all of your overall vga performance. I would never have thought your cpu going up by 400mhz would have such a massive impact on the score. Just lower the cpu voltage and run the cpu at 3.1ghz or something. I really don't think you need to spend money on an upgrade. I have a q9550 and used it for gaming and it is a really solid cpu which should not be bottled necked. When i saw 2000 difference i thought maybe something was not lekka but it just seems cerebus or silver which ever said that 3dmark is heavily dependent on cpu. I only thought that because i know the q9550 is a damn solid cpu.

I will download vantage tomorrow, maybe download and run vantage and let's see what happens.

Let's try this http://unigine.com/download/ will download in the morning and run it.

Thing is though Killa FC2 was a full 20 FPS or so slower with the Q9550 stock which is very wiered. A q9550 will rape the 965 in HyperPI etc.

HTC_guy I need to get a new CPU cooler before I start OC'ing, ATM gets to around 60" under load @ stock levels (albeit Cape Town is retardedly warm in Feb)
Another issue is running 3dmark isn't a simple task for me, my LCD can't do that resolution so have to move the LCD tv...

She is brand new would hate to break something so new and pretty when she is working so well :)

Ya but those hyperpi are very intel friendly.

20FPS is quite a bit slower though. Hmmm maybe you should upgrade :D. Intel has always been better than amd with those kinds of tests.

So you've really got 2 choices: stick with the overclocked processor or upgrade? If you have the money i'd upgrade - I mean why not?

Ya and remember the upgrade bug is something that will eat away at your soul until you go get the stuff :D.

Upgrade bug is as bad as being a drug addict :D.

again, wanna say thanks to all you guys for helping out. Thanks Cerebus for the tuna pasta salad last night! :D

Killa, that screenshot is with my voltage on default... Its set to auto in the BIOS, havent changed it at all.

I agree that upgrading for a 3dmark score is wrong, but like brawler said... its not only synthetic, it also relates directly into realtime. I mean, a full 20 FPS is a lot :erm:

I ran the FC2 benchmark, average was 62 or something like that, so yes much better but still a bit behind...

My theory is that perhaps the 5850 is even being held back by brawlers cpu? Wouldnt that be screwed up! But seriously, if you can get a cooler and test, and bump it a notch of two I bet we goiong to see big improvements in both synthetic and FC2 benchmark. What you think? :)

I dont have 4.5k right now, so Im going to run the CPU at 3.3 (if its stable). I started Prime95 this morning when I left for work... Will see when I get home. I'll wait for Brawler to upgrade his CPU cooler so we can test again... Im not prepared to upgrade till we test my theory!

Killa, you got an i7 right? Are you in Cape Town? :D

3DMARK06 is very CPU dependant. Look on that orb website you see guys with a score of like 33000 with a Xeon 5.0Ghz and a 4890... So yes I think my CPU is holding my 3dmark sore down, however not holding gaming performance down to much..

Edit I seem to remember killa saying that he got around 20000k 3d marks with an i7 @ 3Ghz with 2x 5770 (>5870)

I am sure if I bump up my CPU to 3.6Ghz it would be able to reach that. How safe is the AMD overdrive tool?
