Best printer to buy...

Ever tried to print a nude pic gif file from DOS in a old dot matrix printer back in the eighties???

Doesn't look good.
I found them expensive for what they are. Only suitable for special tasks. Seen how all the banks have them?

For the home or small business user, an inkjet is the cheapest printer to use, if you fill it yourself. The key is to only use a top quality replacement ink like OCP or Inktec, follow the correct refill method and if the cartridge is chipped, use a resetter to clear/reset the chip to "new"

A typical set of single ink Canon cartridges (PGI-5B & CLI-8 C/M/Y) will cost you no more than R50 to refill the entire set - using only the most expensive, quality inks on the market!

An added advantage is that you can refill it whenever the ink runs out, without worrying about holding heaps of expensive replacements on site ( the cheapest generic colour laser cartridge - Samsung CLP300 is +-R300each X 4 = R1200!!).

See www.thefillingstation.co.za

most of the time as stated above in the comparison, pages are measured @ 5% so i would think you may get just over 500 pages if the photos are much more than 5% but i stand to be corrected.

Laser is the way but some of our customers don't want to spend 1000rands on a printer despite the advice we heed on them :o

We have one fellow who buys a new printer everytime the ink finishes :p

I must say lots of good advice given on this topic.

I've found over the years that inkjet really sucks your money up, no matter which brand. My dad just bought generic cartridges for our somewhat old Canon iP3000, and the quality is totally off. Problem is that originals cost an arm and a leg. He does quite a lot of printing.

One day I'd be tempted to get him a colour laser all in one, he would find it very useful. Lasers have come down so much in recent years.

Get him a bulk ink CISS system.

I have the canon ip4200 now, and I'm finished with this high cartridge costs. But I want to know what I'm buying.
What's it with the "memory" they mention on the laser printers?
What resolution is good?

The Ip4200 can take a bulk CISS system. Contact the guy mentioned in the previuos post. You will not be sorry!

A very dumb question. On printer specs, where it says how many pages you can print with a cartridge, it says the following:
Cyan 1000pages
Magenta 1000pages
yellow 1000 pages
Black 1000pages

So say I print a lot of colour pages, will I get only 1000 pages out of it, or 3000 (all 3 combined). I know that figures are not spot on, but just to compare printing costs of various printers, I want to calculate it.

Thanks

Just 3000 pages assuming all colours are used at a 5% ratio. Take note that when you print photos/pics the use are much higher.
