Hi,

I hope someone from Cool Ideas can help us, since calling you guys possibly gets me the wrong info, and responding to emails gets ignored.

I work in a small business and we have recently moved into a new building.

We were told that fibre is available in our area. So we contacted Webafrica and they said, yes, there is vumatel fibre, we can sign up. So we signed up, a date was arranged for vumatel to come to our premises. They did not show up, we had to phone them to find out what was going on. They told us they don't do fibre in our area after we were assured that fibre is there and ready.

We later found out that there is a DFA(Dark Fibre Africa) box inside our building and that some tenants already have fibre. So we did some research and found that you guys provide packages on DFA.

So we phoned you guys to get some details and guestimations of when it can be installed. The first time I phoned I didn't get the chaps name, but he said we could go for either the FTTB or FTTH packages, after explaining the benefits of the FTTB packages we decided that we don't need it for our small business of less than 30 employees and asked if we could rather choose the FTTH packages. We just need a stable internet that is faster than ADSL. There only needs to be one device that is connected to a switch which everyone has access to.

After I was told that it was OK to get the FTTH package on DFA for our building, I relayed the information to my boss.

I phoned a second time to make double sure we can get the FTTH packages for our building, this time I spoke to Mdu. He also assured me that we CAN get the FTTH packages for our building and all we need to do is sign up using the online application, he told us that we can just un-tick the applying as business option on the application.

So after we sent in our application we received an email telling us that we applied for DFA residential, but that vumatel is providing residential packages for our area and gave a link to the vuma residential packages. I replied, explaining the situation with vumatel, and explaining that we ALREADY have a DFA box in our building and that we have been told TWICE that we CAN get FTTH packages on DFA for our building.

But no one has replied yet.

So can someone please help us sign up so we can get fibre.
Yes so it's a bit complicated hence the confusion, Vumatel aren't allowed to service Businesses defined as business parks due to the restraint between DFA and Vumatel. PM me your email and address and I'll send you pricing. You can't opt for FTTH packages in these scenarios.

@ PBCool

I would have ask in any other thread, But you seem like the only person that gives us a better insight in the networks.

Is the problems people are getting just more teething issues on fiber ? ATM speeds are better then adsl but the downtime and errors/ Packetloss issues. Should Fiber not be more reliable then adsl?

So it's a complicated thing, it's a land grab at the moment so most deployments are rushed as it is. Then on top of it, this is a handful of "new" technologies for this country that over a dozen companies are deploying. Basically comes down to stability maturing over time. Same as with DSL in the beginning really.

Any idea when twitter and speedtest issue will be solved without rerouting for CT OS?

@PBCooL

Why don't you guys offer a 1Gbps option over Vumatel?
It's not feasible over the same model as the other products currently. We are looking to build a hybrid product that makes sense.

Would it be possible to offer a package that allows say 1Gbps local with a 100Mbps international?

Chowing an entire 1Gbit port at NAP lol - might not scale well with pricing but lets see what CISP can do.

We have 20Gbps at NAP JHB currently, can scale this to 100Gbps pretty easily. So that's not really an issue.

If the $$$ works out then sure. What would you say is the greatest barrier to providing 1Gbit FTTH?

I think 1Gbps is overkill, I find that the source servers can’t keep up.

The other issue is that during peak times your connection drops. Last night my 100/100 connection became a 8/95 connection, I couldn’t watch an episode on DSTV CatchUp, 285MB was just too much for my line and Multichoice to serve (or combination).

Make me wonder why we set ourselfs up for frustration?

Why pay R1200 for internet and R900 for DSTV, and then you can’t watch a 300MB episode on a legal platform.

I can accept and does that, that in peak times my 100/100 would become 70/90 or even 50/50, but no, 10/100 seems to be the lucky number. Doesn’t help to log a ticket, when they get to it the problem is gone. Like now I get 98/101.

I would love to show a 1Gbps link to my friends, but other than that, no use.

Cool Ideas Fiber ISP - Feedback

We’ve had very different experiences with FTTH then

I would bite for 100Mbps local and 20Mbps international if the price was right.

Steam updates are local, and that is probably 80% of my usage.
The problem is that the line fee is the majority of the cost so it doesn't make sense for us to implement systems that manage local vs international just to then drop the price of the service.

Whereas on 1Gbps it does make more sense.

Also some larger players are going to be peering locally, also with Akamai clusters on-net one can leverage the 1Gbps local quite a bit.

We have had mixed performance from DSTV servers, but they would be aware of performance issues themselves and would be upgrading to keep up with the demand, it just takes time. This applies to all content providers.

Cool, understand that 100%, but why is my local internet connection dropping to so low, only answer I can come up with is congestion.

Doesn’t help to log it, when the ticket gets answered in business hours, then there is no problem.

Few months ago I had to keep logs and charts to get it resolved, hope it get fixed sometime.
