I am trying to connect fibre internet on a microtik router board but am struggling a bit.

Firstly, the username end in @coolideas.co so Im not sure if theres a character missing.

Secondly, I select PPPoE for the address acquisition, enter that username and password and click on Reconnect but nothing happens.

Which lights should be on at the white box on the wall?

I currently have 3 green lights and 1 orange light.

What do I enter at PPPoE Service Name?

1) @coolideas.co is correct. There is no character missing.

2) Not sure about the orange light though.

3) Don’t think you need to enter anything for PPPOE service name.

4) Should not have bought Mikrotik as I said earlier.

5) Hope you figure it out.

Thanks. I got it figured out. Should have selected Apply Configuration at the bottom and not just ons reconnect.

This router has so many different settings and options that I have no idea what 98% of it means but now atleast we have fibre so Im happy.

Ah that’s good, glad you managed to get connected. Yes, Mikrotik is jam packed full of features that you will probably never use. Even my ASUS RT88U has too many features. One thing I do like about my ASUS is the iPhone app which allows me to remotely connect to the router on my phone and I can monitor traffic and do basically anything

Be cautious with not knowing how ROS works, it could leave your router vulnerable to the outside world.

Can agree on that make sure you set a password on it, close ports on it your not using (service ports) and make sure Allow remote requests are off. have it set up like that on my Tik and not had any intrusion issues as of yet

Edit: also if the lan light is orange it means you are connected via 100MBps will be green on 1GBps

@pbcool, what do I need to do with this first hop? I work from home, and can immediately tell when this happens - stuff just ain't snappy any more :-(

I'll try and do a router firmware update later, but not sure it will sort out the first hop.

Is there something wrong with the network? Its slower than my 4meg adsl connection. This is in Cape Town

First hop is line generally, if you are noticing it on the service you need to log it and we need to get it resolved.

Yeah filter chain needs to be in place, DNS amplification is often the issue of missconfig.

Ok, router updated to newest firmware. Interestingly enough the pings to the local gateway (the tp link) has gone down from median of 0.35 ms to about 0.25 ms.

There is a knock-on effect on other hops too - will watch and see if that first hop is more healthy.

It was just momentarily, back to normal again.
Ok back to the issue. It seems that at comes and goes for a while and then the connection is back up again although extremely slow.

Same questions apply :)

I have tested over cable and its the same. Its as if the connection drops for a couple of minutes, returns but extremely slow and then back to normal again for a while.

This is over cable and 2 different mobile devices. My Cool Ideas account was activated this morning.

Please log it with us then, either a line fault of faulty router.

@PBCool - I see the layer2 backhaul from CPT to LON went live last night at 10pm.

When will the outbound traffic also start going over this link?

(looks like inbound from Hurricane Electric at least goes the direct route)

Yeap will switch outbound once it's soaked for a bit :). Latency looks good though at 140ms to London.
