And what is the normal upload rate you would get?

I have also noticed this during the day my upload varies from 780kb/s up to 1.1 mb/s if I am lucky.

Early in the morning at around 2-3am I get full speed on my 20mb up.

This is to different EC2 instances hosted in Ireland.

I will do some tests again this evening when I get home.

Our upload capacity peaks at about 30%, so this could be connection management on the AWS side.

Its possible. He should have a look at https://www.ec2instances.info/?region=eu-west-1 and then sort the instance types by 'Network Performance'. For speed testing a 100Mbps+ connection should look at, at least a network performance category of 'High'.

So for your local IP to our gateway is over the fibre providers network.
 
Finally on fibre and for the few hours we've had it all has been well :D Slowly catching up on many updates that I perpetually postponed because it would take too long on my dirty 4mb ADSL line :p
Just need the supplied router to arrive as I suspect my current one is one the way out after 9+ years (wifi coverage is down and all devices randomly disconnect daily, more so when the wifi is running full tilt).

Would you guys be interested in periodic speedtests (every 15 minutes to some popular destinations)?

Best is to find out what destination IP you connect to in each case and run traces over each network, we peer with Amazon in London and as I say have lots of capacity to them. From the hand off we have no further control of the traffic, we are busy with a direct connect to AWS in Johannesburg but again not sure what effect that would have on their services.
