@PBCool, I'm a Durban Vumatel customer, and I have 100/100 line, and for the last two weeks I've been suffering with contention/over provisioning. I'm on the GPON network.
Admittedly I have waited to see if anything will self correct, but on Thursday night the PPPOE connection started dropping, and did so multiple times.

I created a ticket then, and since, not once have your support team acknowledged the tickets existence. or communicated back to me?
in that ticket are traces and tests to fast.com. up until 2 weeks ago, I could get line speed to Uplay, Steam, fast.com, Durban speed tests, and sometimes even international multithreaded downloads.
Now its about half that. the link is lossy at times, and after using the web at 100mbps, unfortunately I can feel even using a web browser, that it is half as slow now!

#COOL-20180208-76591

P.S. If you could put me in touch with someone at Vumatel that isn't just going to send me back to CISP, I don't mind taking this forward with them.

[EDIT]Yes, everything is cabled.[/EDIT]

Thanks will check it out for you.

Could be high RX levels, which area in durban are you in?

Just to follow up, still seeing speed fluctuations all over depending on time of day. Seems to me like overprovisioning of some kinda cause all the issues go away after 12am but this doesn't seem reasonable.

During the majority of the day I am now on my 200/200 vumatel package seeing speed between 20Mbit to 100Mbit, rarely over 100Mbit so I am starting to wonder what the point is right now to pay for a 200Mbit package.

Local speedtests no issues for the most part so it is definitely not local infrastructure issue but on international access I am seeing these wacko jacko results.

As I am typing this I had a look at fast.com speedtest that until a few weeks ago just about always returned 180-200Mbit/s but since then and right now I am just barely hitting 100Mbit/s on a completely unutilised connection just to be sure.

So here is my question to PBCool, is coolideas oversaturated I just want to hear it from you directly because if it were a vumatel issue I would be getting the same speed issues locally but all the international access is handled by coolideas and that is the only point I am seeing huge fluctuations in speed up until 12am and obviously I am not paying for a 200/200 connection just so I can get reliable speed now between 12am-8am, that defeats the purpose completely.

EDIT: Just after 12am and like clockwork, 205Mbit result on fast.com along with every other speedtest I can run for international. Before 12am I barely get 100Mbit, average hang around 80Mbit. This is quite concerning for me now as it seems to be an everyday occurance as if this is the norm now ?

adding a tad to 'John Tempus' post - I tested on Friday night and both local and international were solid(well better than before) in my opinion.

Yesterday afternoon/late evening it was most definitely not.

Tested this morning, most definitely not in line with Friday night.

What percentage of the line speed should we be getting when testing through speeedtest and fast.com?
Are these sufficient to test our line speed - are there other sites?
Lastly, is it 'easier' to get full speed on a 50Mbps line than a 100Mbps than a 200Mbps?
(reason for asking, I may as well downgrade if not getting what I'm paying for)

cheers for the feedback!

There is no oversaturation from our side, you need to remember that fast.com would probably test to Netflix's peer in Johannesburg and an international speedtest would breakout via our Layer2 to London in Cape Town, so 2 seperate circuits and paths. What I might suspect is that there is congestion on the Vumatel network, so will take it up with them about it.

Remember they upgraded their router at the handover point recently which then more than likely increased the amount of traffic on their network and so could create congestion in certain areas.

Your experience seems to be different to Johns as you are saying in the morning you are still not getting your line speed, which would be a quiet time network wise.

I get this result to fast.com:

"Your Internet speed is 700 Mbps"

So getting to 200 should be fine on this test, and on speedtest.net:

So you should be able to get the same.

"Lastly, is it 'easier' to get full speed on a 50Mbps line than a 100Mbps than a 200Mbps?" No it shouldn't matter so long as your router can manage the amount of throughput you need.

fast.com is definitely reliable and as I can show over and over with my tests. from 12am to 8am I have no problem getting within 90% of my package speed on fast.com. Any time during the day before then it varies between 50Mbit to 100Mbit max on my 200Mbit package. This to me seems like either throttling or massive congestion during peak hours on coolideas international link which worry me quite a bit since its not been the case a month ago.

The part that worries me is that I pay for 200/200 to get close to it 90% of it is fine as I got for many months being with coolideas until recently. It is pointless for me to get 100Mbit during "Awake" hours and my full 200Mbit during 12am to 8am when it is next to useless for me.

That brings me to the final point if this is case then I should just drop my package to 100Mbit or would 100Mbit during same hours give me half the speed ?

A bit confused right now what to do unless this is a problem you guys are looking into.

This would not indicate congestion on cool ideas international capacity, Fast.com runs tests against Netflix nodes. Netflix have nodes in JHB which ISPs get access to when they peer at Napafrica which is free, and Cool Ideas have a netflix node on their network as well.

If you are having issues when testing against fast.com I am pretty certain it's an issue on Vumatels side and not on Cool ideas side.

Right, I agree with all you said but I am just using fast.com as a quick example here and trying to get to the bottom of it.

Local access I am never getting under my 200Mbit, been testing any time of the day. So if this is theoretically a vumatel issue I should be affected locally also, right ? This is where I am having an issue with it being a vumatel issue and not a coolideas saturation issue unless I am misunderstanding everything pretty much.

When I notice the shoddy fast.com speed, I do all kinds of international tests and it all lines up pretty well with fast.com and I highly doubt (obviously not remotely possible) that all international tests I do all peer at the same location in JHB. The point I am trying to make is that during the day until 12am all international access I can test from twitch to youtube to downloading torrents from reliable fast seeds etc. seems to be all over the place whereas after 12am it is rather conveniently all returning excellent near max package speed.

I am not trying to blame anyone other than trying to figure out how this can get resolved, if it can get resolved and specificly what is at fault for the congestion during the day on international link.

You tested it during the timezone I tend to get my max line speed 12am - 8am, give that test a go to fast.com or whatever else from the current hour onwards and you should notice the same wonky speeds I notice, hopefully.

Hi Pbcool I have a vumatel connection with you in Glenvista and it has just disconnected for the second time today! Is there a Vumatel problem?

Just came back is this going to continue with random disconnects?

"Your Internet speed is
920

Mbps"

Remember this is in Johannesburg but using the same international carrier and path.

We havent had any notifications from Vumatel as yet so we arent aware of any issues, will you log it?
