Is there a known problem on DStv Catch Up? When downloading movies to watch now, the down rate is so slow that the movie sits in a buffer. Never had this happen with previous ISP, but then again, Multichoice could've changed things on their side, so just checking.

Other connections seem fine - and my decoder has a ethernet cable running straight to the router, none of that connecta or whatever nonsense.

It looks like DSTV is battling with the demand so performance comes and goes.

Yes, everybody suffers every now and then. Seems they have capacity issues on their content servers/network.

For me it depends on the DNS servers I use.
If I use CISP DNS servers, the DSTV Now streams go through CISP Akamai in JHB, and buffers at times.
If I use CloudFlare dns 1.1.1.1 my DSTV Now streams are routed to Akamai servers on Mwebs network in Cape Town (I am in Cape Town 100/100) and my streams never ever buffer.

Why that is, I don't know. Worth testing out yourselves as well, because I think the Akamai cluster in use will make a difference.

Well that's interesting as we have been getting random reports from all over, I will do some further diagnosis on where the streams source from. I doubt it's all from a single cluster.

Can we have a solution or anything as at night speed to paris etc is 1-4mbps but then after 10pm its back at 90mbps. Just messes with streaming from overseas or twitch ?

I dont think the origin is Akamai, Akamai is just the CDN distributing the streams. Its quite possible, there are more users using the Mweb akamai cluster, and so the chances are bigger that the data is cached faster or something, I am not sure. What surprises me, is that CISP peers with MWeb, so I am not sure why the CISP cluster would cause buffering. I expect the opposite.

Edit: update adding screenshots showing my dstv now streaming from akamai

Looking at traffic on the CPE side of my router:
dstvnow-grabbing-stream.jpg

Because the above is so busy, lets look on the LAN side, and filter to the IP address of my Telkom LIT box streaming DSTV Now, SS1 channel:
dstvnow-grabbing-stream-lanside.jpg

What I found interesting, is the bursts at which the packets come in. Which would explain the delay in the stream, as in it can be a few minutes late vs the same channel on DSTV dish.

Anyways, that IP is on the MWEB Akamai cluster in Cape Town.

Indeed it’s MFN although all my local speeds are tops. 100/100 anytime local just international at those hours
Yes like many customers we are seeing congestion on their network at peak times. This is an ongoing thing unfortunately.
