Can someone explain to me where the actual congestion would be on Octotel's network if degregation is only on the international links?

This to me looks more like throttling/shaping.

With fibre, because the latency to local is super low, those packets gets pushed through the congested pipe faster than the international packets, where the high latency makes them come in too slow, and have to wait whenever there is a small gap for them.

You can test this theory during congested times. Test on locations, the higher the latency, the less the speed will be you get.

Streaming international impossible, switch over to expressvpn and stream perfectly in HD. I dont understand this. Someone is forcing us to stream local only in the evening.

Well GPON imo is not a good solution for bandwidth hungry users. OLT has about 2.5Gbps limit per 64 way split. So depending how they worked it out if they load too many high speed users on the OLT then it will start to get congested. I'm not very clued up with GPON and the technology but as far as I could see the only solution is to add more OLT's and reduce the number of users per OLT but that comes at a cost. A cost that Ocotel would need to absorb which they probably won'unless the congestion gets worse.

Look at the cheap prices Octotel charges for 1Gbps... Atomic 1Gbps/25Mbps @ R1649. Crazy just 2 or 3 of these users can flood the OLT making it horrible for the other people on the same OLT.

There is 2.5Gbps per GPON port and usually 8 or 16 GPON ports per OLT. That bandwidth, combined with the fact people buying services faster than 100Mbps is only about 2% of the market, means there is almost no significant chance of multiple 1Gbps customers per GPON port. The 2% split assumption depends on area etc, but I doubt anybody is using even half a gpon port, ever.

We see customers on Frogfoot with the synchronous lines. e.g. 1000/1000 use more bandwidth than the equivalent asynchronous Octotel line e.g. 1000/25, but it's for short bursts - downloads don't last long on those lines.

At Atomic we have a rule to always ensure we have more bandwidth capacity that is being used. Once usage gets to 80% of capacity, we buy more. It's the same story as to why we started our ISP - we didn't want to put up with congestion, not getting what we were paying for, crummy support etc. So far so good.

Inbox me if you're on Octotel and open to the idea of a trial.

@PBCool
Hope you feel better, my daughter was down all weekend with a stomach bug too, back on her feet after 36 hrs in bed !

When you're back in the game.....

I recently applied for Supercool 50/5 through your website (COOL-20190118-204345), choosing VUMATEL as the line provider.

The previous tenant had a line installed by Telkom/Openserve but we chose VUMATEL.... There is no VUMATEL Aerial line installed but my property does show as covered by Vumatel.(on CISP and VUMATEL website coverage map).

My questions:
1) Does Cool Ideas do the actual liaising with Vumatel to run the Aerial FTTH line installation ? .... or do I personally need to contact Vumatel even though I applied through CISP ?

2) How long do VUMATEL normally take to install a line from when we apply through CISP ?

I have successfully supplied my RICA docs and done the direct debit authorization with CISP.

The application process on your website said someone will call me, but I haven't received any call.

Is there even a point to complaining about this?

I am using the iPad to surf the net and read forums in bed. It’s connected to the 100/25 line I have
Speeds are shocking- it takes 3 1/2 minutes to load a bloody single image from photobucket
Jesus Christ this isn’t dial-up modem internet!!!!

Yeah what’s the point... might as well downgrade and save a few randelas until a new LTE package comes along

Why not just switch ISP and see if it's CISP or Octotel. Make notes and tests before switching. Then switch then test and see. If it's the same take on Octotel demanding refunds or solutions. Why choice do you guys have because come month end you are probably going to get charged the full amount. Just saying.

I have already switched from Vox to Cool Ideas, it is exactly the same.

@sand_man already took one for the team. We know it be the FISP.
That’s why I am looking at LTE again..

If it's congestion on Octotels network VPN won't help and the fact that you can stream fine with VPN but not directly does not seem like congestion tbh.

I am going to do the VPN test tomorrow time willing... that sounds like a good idea, since I can VPN into a known good network

Then what can it be? I have done exactly the same tests with Vox, identical results. At the time I was fighting with Vox. I spoke to Octotel directly, they said there is no problem. To have two ISP's with same issues are unlikely. My neigbour, with another Isp exactly same problem, also Octotel.
