Reason I ask is because trenching is going on in my suburb and my road is currently being done, with Octotel as well. I'm curious as to how it is you think that it will only go live in 2 months. Is that the norm or has that been communicated to residents?

It was an MTU issue!Try firmware update as well.

I had to set my original router's MTU down to 1412. The values that I tried were 1480, 1492 and 1452 - neither worked and I could not access Netflix, ABSA or some other sites using any of those values.
What is very strange though is that the Cool Ideas router has its MTU set to 1480 and everything works perfectly fine, whereas with my router I need to set the MTU much lower. Do you have any idea why that could be?

layer2 mtu needs to be higher than layer3. This is, because the layer3 (tcp/ip) packet needs to be able to fit inside the layer2 (ethernet) packet.
Its possible you looked at layer2 mtu on the CISP router, and the layer3 mtu on your own router.
Then if you dial a PPPoE session, you looking on the MTU on the PPPoE interface, or the MTU on the ethernet interface over which the PPPoE session is dialed?
Line is back up after beeing escalated to Metrofibre.
Apparently backend changes. Should be fine now.

I am going to be honest, I am not really familiar with those devices. I do know on my Mikrotik, when creating a PPPoE client interface, it shows both layer2 mtu and layer3 mtu on the interface, which makes it easier to narrow it down. Now since I am on vumatel, I can't confirm what PPPoE looks like, but on ethernet, my layer3 MTU is 1500 and the L2 MTU is 1598. So 98 size difference. PPPoE however, the L2 MTU would need to fit inside of that, lets say 1480 could work, which means the L3 MTU would need to be even smaller.I believe it was the MTU on the PPPoE interface for both routers.

- Plug ONT into WAN port of CISP router. CISP router is configured to connect using PPPoE. MTU on the PPPoE page is set to 1480. All sites are accessible via the CISP router.
- Plug ONT into WAN port of my router (ASUS RT-AC87U). Use PPPoE and on the same PPPoE page, try set an MTU of 1480, 1492 and 1452 - Netflix, ABSA & speedtest.net are inaccessible. Change MTU on PPPoE page to 1412, everything works.
One thing to note is if I connected the ONT to the CISP router WAN port, then connect the CISP router to my router WAN port (thus double NAT) and set a static IP for the WAN connection on my router instead of PPPoE (since the CISP router does the PPPoE connection), then the MTU on my router defaults to 1500 and everything still works, but as you say the MTU setting this time is for layer2?
