Cool Ideas Fixed 5G/4G Feedback Thread

Thinking of subscribing to their Vodacom 5G offering. How's the service/speeds been thus far?

Yeah, really want to know if VC is doing that "unofficial" throttling crap of MTN's when usage is still far from FUP

Has the Unlimited = 1000GB package been dropped? I can't see it listed on the site anymore.
HI there, sorry about that. We have removed it due to some ongoing discussions with Vodacom on the subject.
We hope to have the package up again soon, but will stay removed for now.

@CoolEscalator @CoolHelp I'm deliberating between 5G and Fibre. I understand all the benefits of fibre over wireless but price point is crucial for me. If I sign up for the 50Mbps 5G package, there is no guarantee that I will reach 50Mbps, in fact, I could possibly only reach 20-30Mbps, is that correct?

HI there. The speed of the 5G service, or any cellular service is dependent on your distance to the nearest tower, signal interference, loadshedding, placement of the router, Capacity on that tower, etc. The speeds mentioned is the maximum expected speed for that package.

With Fibre we can at least guarantee you will receive those speeds over a LAN cable.
Wireless speeds are unfortunately never guaranteed, but we will try our best to help you achieve those speeds if you don't.

Good day. I see there is a choice between Vodacom 5G and MTN 5G for my address. Which provider would be best?

We have seen in other threads how MTN throttles the uncapped connections even though they're far from the FUP. I would not touch MTN if we're talking uncapped.

So this would be for their 3G/4G network/service, They would have a different FUP for 5G as specified in the product description.

MTN FUP - 10Mbps = 200GB. 20Mbps = 300GB. 50Mbps = 450GB. 100Mbps = 600GB. . After monthly FUP limit, speeds are changed to 1Mbps.

But out of the 2, In my opinion MTN offers better customer support compared to Vodacom
But performance - wise it would depend on their presence/infrastructure in the area and your location to the nearest tower

Both options are pretty solid

One other factor to consider is that Vodacom hands over the traffic to CISP in JHB, so if latency is important to you and you live outside of Gauteng that might be an issue.

I hope you're right. It just seems dishonest from MTN to give a FUP but then have an additional internal FUP/throttling that the user is not necessarily made aware of. How long before they do this on 5G? Fortunately you guys offer month-to-month deals, so one can always switch or cancel.

Is the cool ideas fixed 5G available with a public ip ?
Have some cameras and need to VPN to a few desktops so need a public ip
