Hmmmm. How much cheaper? Last time I checked it was marginal at best...

comparing the packages available at the moment with another ISP

Vuma 500GB + 50Mbps Line = R1099 PM

Telkom 400GB + 40Mbps line =R1938 PM

while i understand data prices etc play a part here i would still say its a hell of a lot cheaper with the Vuma line.

Well that is interesting.

On my phone, but will go check the telkom bundle pricing.

However line pricing is as follows on Telkom.

10mb - 538
20mb - 638
40mb - 739
100mb - 839

Those are lines only. Then you can tack on whatever data you want.

line prices received from VOX today.

Telkom Fibre Link

10 Mbps @ R479 p/m
20 Mbps @ R559 p/m
40 Mbps @ R639 p/m
100 Mbps @ R749 p/m
Once off R R1710

however they want to lock you into a 24 month bundled option. No way in hell I'm doing that.

so it looks like WA for the line & CW for the data for the win. until CW can offer lines included *cough, Shaun...

I think one thing to bear in mind here when comparing costs of Telkom vs other localised operators is that they come from different bases on capex, opex, regulatory and policy mandates, risk, and scope of work. Telkom will naturally have a higher cost and importantly risk to absorb into their business but theoretically, had their fibre planning team not been largely hampered in their efforts, more to gain. Although I personally still find the pricing of Telkom FTTH a bit curious considering their largely unchanged pricing model on wholesale. It's still rather pricey to all parties concerned and does pose challenges to ISPs depending on uptake...

Contract works fine for me. Cost adjusts downward and I'm not moving anytime soon.

Won't cancel my fibre.

Yup. One of the things I asked pertinently.

Only downside is the cost and time involved to upgrade or downgrade your line speed. Currently costs R200 and takes a week. According to consultant.

They're pricing their line rental on their IPC cost model?

i can only imagine what 30 + users @ 100Mbps on the weekend could do to your network.

Can't speak for how they price their lines necessarily but as for ISPs you'll operate over our normal IPC networks for Telkom fibre. You know a thing or two about networking so you can imagine how depending on uptake this could pose some challenges in peak times on uncapped models. Hence why you see heavy uncapped FUPs and a push to capped for this sort of thing...

Vuma prices I can see so far:
Mweb, 20mb, R700pm with 50GB of data
Web africa 50/5, R899 with 200GB of data
Telkom seems to be way off here.

Hence my statement about preferring to avoid telkom fibre ;)

Correct, and not really weekends altogether, but what network realistically runs spare capacity in the multi-Gbps range on IPC that's barely utilised or intermittently utilised? So there are some unique challenges that need to be factored in and a fair amount of planning ahead before simply launching and then finding your DSL users suffering for example. This is why I've been saying for a while that simply demanding lower and lower pricing means the end user feels the pinch and it does limit the kind of advances we can make as new technology comes to the fore. If it's all about bottom line to the end user then there's less recapitalisation into the network to afford you better experiences - I am however talking generally here and in my personal opinion (with a bit of a grasp of the costs and complexities involved).

It's why I've tried to be as transparent as I can. I prefer to be able to have an intelligent and open discussion about these sorts of things rather than accusations that "all ISPs are money making machines and thieves and drive Lambos on our dime". :p

what car do you drive Shaun?:wtf::D

With Telkom racing the likes of Vumatel etc to get FTTH to the public they are going to put tremendous pressure on their network as well as ISP's. interesting times ahead...

But i absolutely agree with what you are saying. Something has to give or the **** is going to hit the fan soon.
