Now that IS impressive! Just confirm this is over your normal home connection and not sitting at some very conveniently located business node.

I stand corrected, FTTH is making a huge difference. No question, and end to end fibre is at the moment changing things drastically.

Now what about where the WIN 10 update was coming from? If the source was somewhere close you may just be correct.

Compare this with a normal ADSL client in PTA to the same points as you posted :

13 ms when no other activity is taking place on my LAN.

Right now, I have a very large Dropbox download taking place ,and the best I can get over a public ADSL network is 34 ms.

Mine was ADSL lol.

So now to answer where the latency comes from.

(1) Distance contributes about 3 µsec per km (Free space) and 4 µsec per km through optic fibre. So while distance is the dominant factor internationally, distance is not the factor locally all that much.
(2) Properly configured hardware is a few µsec per device, so the higher the number of routers etc in the chain the more added latency one gets. So again, mostly this is not the dominant factor either.
(3) Next is the enscapsulation techniques used has quite a large impact on latency. So those of you on full GE system are really at the forefront here. Even with GE, if not implemented correctly, will show up as increased latency.
(4) Next is compression and encryption.
(5) Routers add latency if links and nodes are congested. Hence the quick way out when users complain. If all else fails blame exchange congestion.
(6) Closer to home, one needs to look at PCs and their operating systems as well. Those with incorrect window sizes will also show up as increased latency, affecting the bandwidth-delay product, ideally the window size needs to match the bandwidth-delay product.
(7) the "contention" present a network loading is probably the biggest factor in our environment. Hence, at the moment FTTH is working very well as those networks should be effectively lightly loaded, but ahs more and more clients come on board, and the ISPs do not increase capacity, we can expect performance to decrease and latency to increase.
(8) Routing has a major effect, especially under fault conditions, as well as how traffic is restored after faults are fixed . (example is the Blizzard issue) at the moment.
(9) Servers contribute quite a bit to latency, proportional to the demand for connections.

Any more anyone wants to add?

Words of praise from me to your Support Chat this evening.

Bombarded the poor fella/lass behind that chat window with a mass of nitpicky, icky questions which he/she handled with aplomb and good humour.

I've finally hit my pain point with my existing ISP - the FatPipe was good while it lasted but its performance has simply degraded too much.

Will be signing up with you guys from the 1st (heh, if there was a pro rata on the Capped offering Id've signed up this evening already)

PS: Now I'm waiting for my area to go dark purple on the Telkom coverage (it's light purple at the moment) and I'll start looking at your fibre offerings as well.

Appreciate the feedback, thank you. Lovely to hear. We're busy with upgrades on our side BTW - shouldn't be impacted on your end as we're keeping all impacts to an absolute minimum!

Oh, also, you'll find a nice surprise on capped pro-rata if you sign up now BTW...;)

Wait, what - that's not what the ChatBot told me...

So, you're telling me if I press that button...

You do know the page is open in another tab just waiting for the 1st to roll around

The guys on support have not yet been informed. I only finished it recently and we'll be announcing it officially, well, not tonight.

But yes, if you press that button...magic will happen...:D

Hmm...
What date would you like your account to go live and be billed from? Uncapped accounts attract pro-rata. Capped accounts are provisioned without pro-rata and you will have access to the full number of gigs for the product you have selected.

I'm going to be taking the hit on my existing ISP's notice period - don't want to be paying R279 for 1 day...

Your activation date: Tomorrow
DSL Line Migration: No, thanks.
Subscription: Home Capped 100GB (CWHC90)
Modem-Router: No

Total Cost: R279 (if you have selected a modem router, this will only be billed once. Your monthly costs are only those of your DSL data subscription, DSL Line if you have chosen to migrate it, and any additional monthly add-ons you may have opted for)

Are the above details correct?

I haven't hit the "Yes" button yet for obvious reasons :D

Edit: Btw, that was the best signup workflow I've seen yet. Click, click, click, click

We will be amending everything accordingly (including website copy).

What you got there was more a "psst, hey, here's something nobody else knows yet"...:D

You can trust me on this one...;)

I honestly haven't noticed anything of note. :)

How are the upgrades going? Last I heard the hardware was getting through customs.

Great to hear!

Still no change. Prizes we bought for a new competition came through quicker. :(

But should be done very shortly as soon as it's in. And opens up some great opportunities for some cool stuff.

Most of what we've been talking about over the last while are coming to fruition. Lots to get excited about...:)

Account is pretty much dead atm, will have to jump on support ...... anyone else seeing very bad packet loss and no sites loading?
