With the help of the service desk I traced my problem, which I first blamed on Telkom (congestion and with them working in the area).

Problem was that all PCs in the house could access the net but was painfully slow, with no pages loading completely. Service desk indicated that my account (and line) was currently maxing out at full line speed.

I physically removed all ethernet cables excepting my own. Same problem.

Then I disabled the router's wireless connections. Bingo. Line quiet.

Then I wanted to track the culprit device so I enabled wireless connections again... kids and wife were unhappy as I made them switch off all their phones, tablets, iPads, etc. - Still maxing out.

Last device still connected was the.... DSTV Explora !!!! Switched it off and all was well again.

So what had changed? I recently did a factory reset on the Explora. This caused my custom download settings to be cleared so it downloaded whenever DSTV decided to wake up and this usually happened in prime time!! Reset the DL times for 1-6am and no problems since.

Nee man, it's not an all or nothing.

You define which devices need to connect via the Hotspot and which don't need to.

Oh. Didn't see that in the video. Regardless, I realised the heaviest user in the family doesn't connect via the wifi, so the whole thing would be pointless and probably punishing the innocent parties.

What the heck. Why does the DSTV Explora even have wifi capabilities? I have one, but have never spotted it in the Ubiquiti UniFi user list. If that thing has been degrading our connection (or heaven forbid - downloading 94GB) I'm going to be peeved.

I think he has the optional Wireless Dongle thingy attached - it's not built in WiFi

It's used for downloading extra catchup episodes and suchlike.

My line is down yet again. Nothing to do with CW as changing ISP doesn't do a damn thing. This is driving me nuts. Whenever I log a fault, the situation has resolved by the time I get a call from Telkom. And then they aren't keen to send a technician and warn me about charges that apply if a fault isn't found.
