True but isnt 150-250K better than MWeb? When I was there I barely got 75K

depends on what and when as i usually got 200-400. obviously p2p is shaped, and i dare say that OW's golden is gearing towards it's limit of users on 25.7 max line as predicted...

Food for thought that. But I wouldn't want to share as if TWO of us were downloading I'd hit the shaping window quickly!! I am assuming that the combined download capacity of both connections would count towards the listing position.

@biometrics: In your test month, were you ever shaped? Since most of my downloading WILL be torrent-based, the shaping is a real issue to me. Do you know how the shaping is implemented? Are you throttled to an Mweb-like speed (grin) or would my torrents just go to 50% linespeed until (or if ever) I am out of the 50%?

@hereticangel: At this point my exchange doesn't support 10mbps. Sigh. I watch that Telkom site like a hawk. So at this point, that after hours policy is a tad pricey for only getting 4megs.

Truly, our comms are still waaay too expensive. I mean, to get a decent download speed, with a decent volume of data (NOT 15GB!!) you have to fork out some serious cash every month!

Anyway, I think that at the end of this month I must give Mweb my notice, but use their 4 meg for the notice month, then in March it's off to Axxess. Then one day, when Telkom finally reached my exchange (and may I add that two of my friends are on 10 meg exchanges!) then I will have a whole new decision to make. The best (i.e. most bang for my buck) is Cybersmart's R400 account (plus R399 ADSL rental) for 2am-5am free downloading with a 15 GB cap otherwise -- but UNshaped at 10mbps. The only reason I am hesitant on that is that I can then only seed between those hours - else it eats my cap.

I know I write a lot, but I appreciate everyone's input.

waiting for the x-openweb subscriber thread since i can see even xrapidx is not getting his money's worth over at the greener grass.

...seems that more isn't worth it always, right ?

The Openweb Gold product and support from MrBEEP is far superior to MWEB. If I had to chose an uncapped product again it would be Openweb Gold.

My issue might also be unrelated to the actual product, I've noticed that when I switch from an Openweb account to another ISP and back - the account flies.

My biggest issue is I don't download 24/7... when I see something I want I download it, and expect it to be going at full speed, which is maybe wrong for uncapped accounts.

The speeds I see on HTTP, and especially P2P are better than I got on MWEB in 6 months.

Openweb also does not blame Telkom, or have various issues constantly, usually around weekend time,- which is a major plus to me... when Openweb have issue's they don't severely limit your connection.

I'm actually looking for something to download now - just to see how my connection is doing.

If I do leave Openweb, it'll be to go back to capped, unshapped -I'll still recommended them as the best uncapped provider.

I've been waiting for it :D

Busy downloading a Top Gear Episode I want to show a friend tonight - its 1080p, sitting at 320KB/s... lets see if it holds. (I've also got a torrent going at 30KB/s)

PS. Openweb doesn't have Roux on the network :p

No, been fine all month and did 220 GB.

Keep in mind it is throttled during office hours. I don't do torrents but my usenet is 50 KBps during the day and 300 KBps after hours (my line syncs at 3 Mbps).

This account is not for you if are downloading 24x7. You'll end up in the top 50% of the 4 Mbps accounts and then you are throttled.

At R248/connection this deal is a real bargain.

Ok - looks like I'll be cancelling - even with the help of Openweb, I can't get this account to maintain decent speeds - sitting at below 100KB/s, switching to a capped account runs at full speed... so it seems I'll be using capped until uncapped becomes usable.

Capped? Not sure - who ever.

Just noticed something odd - I stopped my torrent download, and my newsgroups suddenly went to full speed... I'll leave the torrents off and see it holds

@xrapidx - what is the price difference in relation to your bandwidth usage?

Torrents have a much higer overhead traffic wise than news. The multiple connections do seem to affect news downloads.

Despite only being home for 10 days in December, I reached 170gigs on my Openweb afterhours account. I could probably hit around 500 or more gigs if I wanted. Problem is I cant find anything else to download that interests me.
when I was on axesss express, I couldn't do more than 50gigs in an entire month.

No clue - can't check usage on VB - although - with uncapped, I'm not really interested in 'usage'... with prepaid, I'll just buy as I use. It'll probably end up costing the same as I won't download things that I don't REALLY need.

Just did a 3x cycle of closing and openning my torrent app, as soon as it starts, total bandwidth drops... doesn't do it on Afrihost though...

It is enabled.... It seems torrents were causing the problem... line has been constant at over 400KB/s since shutting them down.... very weird that it doesn't happen on Afrihost... but I'm happy not using torrents.

It would seem torrents were causing havoc - as soon as I started a torrent download, newsgroups died - I tried limiting the speed of the torrent uploads/downloads, as well as the connections - as soon as it starts, newsgroups died.

So I'll have to use one or the other at a time... currently sitting at over 400KB/s on newsgroups.

Two things:
1) If you want a GOOD ISP and you are not wanting uncapped, I recommend Cybersmart, based on my own personal experience with them. They have on package that is really worth looking at: for R799 for the up to 10mbps account, which INCLUDES the ADSL line rental, you get 15GB Cap, but also get FREE downloading between 2am and 5am. So if you schedule for then, you can pull an immense amount of data down. We calculated that if you run at 75% of linespeed (just to bring a real world element to it) you can pull about 10 GB per night in the "free" window. That's 300 GB per month. None of us can watch that much stuff!
2) If you aren't usually a torrent downloader, where do you get stuff from? (This is more for my own education.) I saw you mentioned newsgroups. Anything else? One thing about Cybersmart though, they don't allow connections to Mweb and IS's news servers.

@biometrics: When you say usenet: where exactly are you connecting to? The free news server at Mweb and IS, and NZB's from nzbsa? Or is there more that I am not aware of? Please educated me!
Thx!

1.) It actually looks like my issue has been resolved, I left a newsgroup download running last night, it pulled 14GBs.

2.) Astraweb.

Have you tried a different torrent program? Vuze is awesome.

News is far superior though so it may be a good thing to move away from the crap that is torrent :D
