Telkom just left my house. They did nothing, and will be asking their piping installer to try get to my house tomorrow to get things ready. They said they have no idea when they can return to my house after that. And they won't do the install until everything is in place.

I can't believe they rocked up here without the ability to stick pipes along an outside wall. You'd think that's the most common means of installing Telkom fibre.

I give up. This stupid installation can just happen when it happens.

I have no words!! This sucks so much!! I don't blame you for getting to the "I don't care when it happens" stage. Not cool at all.

From my perspective you atleast have dsl still. As from today I am without internet. Looks like my install is scheduled for Friday so let's hope for the best!

So...
Bryn have the "piping" people arrived yet today?

Any luck on your side MeTsu??

I've just got this feeling I'll be sitting at home for nothing on Friday. Don't want to jinx it, so touch wood!

Nope. No one has arrived. I wasn't optimistic though.

I've come to understand how Telkom works a bit better:

We're absolutely going to do it on this day => it will happen within a week of that date.

We're not sure when we can do it => you'll be in a frail care home before it happens. Your only hope is an upgrade to the statement above.

Hahahaha!! I'm taking notes...

My cousin works somewhere on the technical side at telkom here in pe, after a long wait i asked him for help (don't like doing it though). Wanted him to check my install date. He says he can't find me anywhere on their systems. Asked Garth for more info on my order and he copy-pasted some stuff from somewhere. Checked it - it was order info for someone else, asked Garth again, sent me the same stuff. So yah, unless im on another system, my name or address isn't to be found on the Telkom system.

Hey guys,

Telkom arrived, my wife went back home to assist. They were very helpful and professional and called me to discuss. I didn't have to even mention that I wanted an underground solution - due to the trees and bushes they wanted to suggest it or trim the tress if I was truly desperate.

Apparently they will be back there sometime this afternoon with someone senior to show them why they recommending subterranean.

They arrived around 10:30. Also, they will run the Fibre run into my study which is opposite side from where the pole is. They will more than likely go into the roof and run via there to avoid seeing the loops they make when tackling corners.

Thanks for the update. Hopefully they have the necessary equipment to get it done. The guys who rocked up at my house didn't have much capability other than just running a naked cable.

Glad to hear things went well MeTsu!! I think you guys in Millpark have a bit of an issue due to the fibre running on the poles. So there's more to consider and more work.

Don't know whether MickeyD knows much about the installs at Thriftwood but i asked one of the contractors about the conduits running to the units, and I'm really worried the fibre won't be flexible enough to run through them... Guess I'll find out on Friday.

Would be strange if you had any problem as the whole complex layout was customised fro fibre services. Background... while the were building your complex, Telkom was bidding for the contract at Baywest (and failed). The next best alternative for them to establish a fibre node was within the grounds of your complex. That node feeds your complex, all Telkom services at Baywest and the nearby Telkom towers / masts. The offset was that Telkom provided all the pipes and ducts for the telecom servies in the complex.

Nice piece of info, thanks MD. I think also because there are already services installed there shouldn't be too much of a problem.

So, did anything happen in the end?

Hey Bryn,

I'm not sure if they came back again this afternoon, I was too busy to contact my domestic and ask her unfortunately. My wife explained to me just now the conversation she has with the two really well presented and polite Telkom chaps. Certainly knew what they were talking about.

It ties up with what we discussed on the phone. They did mention they were busy with a few FTTH installs in Mill Park.

So they didn't install anything today then? Or did you mean you hadn't yet gone home to find out?

Lots of people over atm, installing pipes along the top of a stretch of the outside wall. There's a Telkom guy with them and he said he's busy with an installation in the area and will get here when these guys are done.

Would be amazing if they could finish today.

Fantastic news Bryn.

I'm leaving a client and meeting a contractor for Telkom at 13:30 at the house to measure up the bill of materials for my subterranean installation. :D

My wife popped home to saw that the two guys who met with her yesterday are busy in Reitz Road.

Good stuff. The guys here mentioned that they only stopped by because they're busy with another installation in the area. They prioritise nearby orders that are close to one being worked on, as it often means that they can do two orders in one day.

I'm really hopeful that they manage to finish mine today. They're working pretty fast getting the trunking on top of the wall. The fibre cable is going to be pretty long. :o

Awesome to hear that both you and Metsu's installations are progressing! Let's hold thumbs they finish today!

If the Telkom guy is still at your house, please ask him if he's aware of an installation at Thriftwood on Friday.

The guy with a tablet is the one who seems to know what's what. If I see him I'll ask.

It's raining now. Was a little heavy earlier but it's lightened up. Really, really hope the installation continues.

Awesome that would be much appreciated!

Damn, so close but still feels so long to go!! And the rain isn't helping either! Let's hope it clears and that they can do your install before end of the day!

Things are going well so far. The guys are busy putting in the final nails on the trunking installation. I must commend them for doing a professional job.

Now I just need Telkom to actually run a cable through all of this.

Edit: No one from Telkom is currently around. I see that there's a huge spool of fibre cabling on the ground in the side alley, and that it's been run through all the new trunking. Hopefully Telkom isn't keen to leave the fibre lying around and will return to finish the installation.

It was pouring with rain just now, but it's cleared up fortunately. Holding thumbs that the guys are finishing up at the other Mill Park installation and will return momentarily.
