FTTH Rondebosch

So the digging has started (I'm assuming for fiber :) ), but on the opposite side of the road. Should we be concerned that there's no work on our side of the street? Or will there be some other way to get the fiber across to our side of the road? E.g. via the overhead electricity cables?

Spoke to the guys doing the trenching and they say the digging starts on our side of the road from next week. There are now OpenServe boards up where they are doing the trenching. It's Saturday, and there's an army of guys digging up one side of Keurboom Road, and another active in Belvedere Rd, so this is starting to look like an actual happening thing.

Crews at hard work in Belvedere Road, Keurboom Road and some of the surrounding side roads

Random knock on the door this morning - TELKOM crew needs access to the yard to "install fiber" along the telephone poles. It's getting closer. Anyone have an idea how long it may take from here?

Glad to hear it's getting close for you. From reading many of the other Telkom FTTH threads I would estimate 3 - 6 months.

We in Roosevelt Rd Claremont and they've pulled cable, added the black boxes to the pole. Seen the guys tirelessly splicing cables. Thursday night the guys were busy till 18:30

Cool! Are they also going the aerial route (via telephone poles) or did they dig up the pavement?

Yes going aerial route, seems as if the underground ducts were already in place so they just pulled the fibre to each pole. Not much digging. Also on Friday the ground work team were tarring where they had dug so seems like it's going to be finalised soon.

Nice! Let's hope we are pleasantly surprised and get an early switch-on. Personally, I'll be happy if we can go-live by June, before the winter storms hit us.

Looking at the Openserve map, my area is not even listed as being considered yet...but they are very busy with splicing and the sorts. :wtf:

Rollout is gaining serious momentum.Tremendous amount of activity in Sandown Road and the streets feeding into it.

It's day 3 of "TELKOM-in-the-yard" for me. I'm at work during the day, so not entirely sure what they are up to, but arrived home today to find the yard in a bit of a mess. They left a message that they need to be back tomorrow to continue the work.

I'm a bit confused though, initially they requested access to bring in fibre via the telephone cable, but they've dug a big hole close to the pole (tearing up my brick paving in the process), and appear to be laying some cable / ducts into the hole. I would appreciate it if someone with some technical knowledge can identify the cables and perhaps explain what they're up to.

I'm a little worried because Telkom never returned on Thursday or Friday, so the yard is still in the state above, with cables half inserted. While they were working in full-force last weekend, there's no work happening this weekend. There was a little bit of rain about, but nothing that would stop a cricket match. Hopefully, it's just a temporary hold-up...
