Home-Connect ISP Feedback

Aaah. I thought they gave you the AC9. That's makes sense that your speeds are capped at 100Mbs then.
Sorry - my mistake, I hadn't listed the model in my first post, I thought AC1200 was the model, but now I've looked up what that means.

I also wanted to ask about international speeds - I was getting 2Mbps to London and now 5-15Mbps (down). I don't know what is common amongst other providers and I don't know if they've fixed the cables yet which might throw off current speed tests.

With my current connection 100/25 with seacom/octotel I get about 70/20 to the UK and the US

And is Octotel fibre at all dependent on area or on congestion or any other factor? Or is it as simple as if we are both running on Octotel, then it can only be that Seacom has better bandwidth internationally than HC? (And the cables that were broken are reported as fixed https://www.businessinsider.co.za/wacs-undersea-internet-cable-is-broken-again-2020-3)

It depends which node your are on for that specific provider and if that node is oversubscribed , I have seen complaints from certain areas where bandwidth becomes constrained during peak times , personally I cant say I've seen that where I am. Secondly the ISP you use may have better routing and bandwidth provision for international links than others , SEACOM seems to have good redundancy in this regard. Homeconnect just by looking at general feedback seems to have issues with international bandwidth but I don't have any first hand experience with them yet.

Is anyone else having pathetic speeds after these upgrades? Some of the services I use which have local cloudflare outlets are running at a tenth of their normal speed.

Thank you - you're right. And they can't get me a new router during lockdown. So I changed the package to 100/100 for now.
Still dont understand why they cant get the routers to any one during Lock down, they are essential service and the courier company are running so beats me

Sorry just saw this now, here is the result: https://www.speedtest.net/result/9260118639

Internet in general has been slow for the last few days.

Ouch , that's a bit concerning. frogfoot are coming to install their line next week I guess im going to have to take a gamble and see how they compare , I will be able to test both FNO's side by side for a month still

Well my line is installed and HomeConnects international speeds are absolute dogsh!T

So much for Uncapped , Unshaped internet . International traffic is definitley SHAPED. I still have my Octotel line with SEACOM running alongside this and that pulls full 100Mb/s along the same international route.

For comparison heres a 200mb/s test using CISP to the same route

I think these clowns need to be somehow reported for this , they are clearly advertising a product as something it is not.

*EDIT

Shaping/Throttling confirmed , I managed to bypass it using a VPN

Usenet now also runs at full speed via VPN , without it its limited to 10mb/s

I have noticed the exact same performance you speak of and it has ramped up since the speed upgrades were rolled out, definitely feels like shaping as most international services are locked at exactly 30 Mbps on the downstream which is pathetic!

It is pathetic , for now I've managed to bypass it but it means laying out R150pm extra for a VPN , I may as well have chosen a more expensive ISP who doesn't shape.

The problem I have is that the service is quoted as unshaped when you sign up , at least be honest about what we are getting for the price.

Yes, something is wrong here. I am also forced to use a VPN for streaming.
Specially in the evenings/late afternoons. I cannot watch anything without buffering.

Like @Diesel44 and @tkburn have stated the only way to get a decent stream going is to use a VPN, Stream goes from 30Mpbs to 160Mbps just by switching on the VPN to the netherlands. If you open a ticket you get the inevitable "Run a speed test and send us the results." to which they reply "Nothing is wrong and we don't guarantee international speeds." These guys have obviously dramatically overtaxed their capacity with the free upgrade bandwidth and are now shaping us to death.

Doesn’t it go by buy cheap get cheap ?

Well lets log a call, please DM me your account numbers i will log a call now for all of us and tell them that if they do not fix they must cancel lines with no early cancellations fees or we go to the ISP Council and fight it out there.

They have 2 options

1. Fix the issue
2. Release our lines at no cost.

Any one that will support this please PM me

Hello all,

Just some feedback i have logged a call to the ISP and they just called back,

He states they do not guarantee international speeds, i explained to him it is not about the guarantee but the shaping that is an issue, he said he will escalate the matter to higher management and get back to me i also sent them a link of the thread so that they can see we are not just one customer that is concerned and we need proper feedback to resolve the matter.

Please advise who can assist with testing when the need is there as i believe we will be asked again.

I do believe we can resolve this with them lets see what happens
