how expensive is a wedding??

Busy planning mine now and do yourself a favor and look at the venue for winter as they are usually cheaper then. August is technically still winter. :)
If you do it on a Friday or Sunday you can get a few freebies as well or save some cost. I got the heaters, sherry and snacks thrown in for going this route and the average temp is around 23-25C by then (thank you global warming).

Whats going to get me is the smaller things. Like decor, candle holders, brides flowers, jewelery and make-up for the day etc. So if you know of anyone drop me n PM as I would appreciate any help I can get here.

Elope. And spend the money on yourselves rather.

+1
Or spend it paying off a house, or a car.

A marrige certificate is dirt cheap at dept of home affairs. Dont know the exact price but wont be more than a 100 bucks. So thats R100 if she really loves you, the less she loves you the more expensive it becomes!

Exactly! :D

We had 120 people and got away with R35K.

Had lots of friends and family help in their specific fields (Photography, decorating e.t.c.).

That's reasonable.

If you want some very unique and low-cost wedding photos, buy a bunch of disposable cameras and hand them to the guests, and collect them afterwards. That way you'll get a good variety of photos, and probably some funny and dodgy late-night photos as well. This way you'll have unique wedding photos that people would actually WANT to look at. I'm sure a lot of people are now sick and tired of looking at wedding albums in the same style, with the same poses as everyone else.

Awesome idea.

Just celebrated 5 year wedding anniversary .(this after 11 years on and off dating) - R7k total - including rings, clothing, picture, food and drinks.

we had speeches, toasts and pre-drinks at home. We took our pictures.

30 people, took them to Boston BBQ at Goldreef(yes it does sound cheesy and not the thing to do) - but it worked out very well.

Well done!

Got married in January. Food is the killer at R240 pp x 80.
R130000, including wedding rings(cheaper than her engagement ring) for both of us, without the honeymoon. It depends on a number of factors tbh. We were not going to skimp on the photographer as well as the venue, although the venue worked out much cheaper than some of the places in Stellenbosch. 1 big piece of advice is to budget and also add some extra cash for miscellaneous expenses.

Was it all worth it?

we got married at Catello di Monte in Pretoria http://www.castello.co.za/

Was a morning wedding, 20 closest friends / family.

Total cost : R10 000 (excl dress, rings etc)

And that included my SO staying over friday evening, and both of us on saturday

My possible wedding venue one day ;)

We got married last month and had around 80 guests. The total cost was around R100k for the whole thing. We certainly didn't skimp on the photographer and did the traditional white wedding. It turned out to be quite an expensive exercise nonetheless.

Considering years have gone by, was it all worth it? You're not in debt or anything?

Keep it tiny and super cheap and SPEND $$$ on your honeymoon. Big wedding is just not worth it. Trust me! We're still paying...

How long did it take you to pay it all off?

As mentioned by others, elope rather. Pay for the mom/dad and tell mates they are welcome to join, way cheaper and the bonus is you are already on honeymoon, IMHO

Whoever necro'ed this thread, add at least 20% to all the prices mentioned in here ;-). Call it inflation ;)

We did the the R20 at home affairs in July and not sorry at all, rather use the money for saving for your future home etc

Why do people spend so much money on impressing other people? Go to home affairs or if you want have an ordained person do it. Really it's such a waste of cash.

R1000 a head is a safe bet for a reasonable not too over the top wedding.

That's going cheap.

R30 000 for 30 people.

Far worse is that people make debt to do it. I cannot imagine a worse way to start a long term relationship than a **** load of debt.

A colleague of mine recently got married, her ceremony dress was 80k alone, her party dress was 30k. There were about 250 guests at the wedding, and lots of gate crashers. This was her white wedding, her traditional wedding was in January already.

What's up with gate crashers? A close friend of mine got married 2 years ago and they had to put up five extra tables for the unexpected guests. There wasn't enough food so they had to run out to buy nandos!

Most girls still grow up dreaming of the "perfect" wedding.

Mmm, no, I would say about 25% of my wife and my yearly salary in our case.

With the honeymoon and rings, would say about half.

You're lucky then :)

Ours is gonna be about 70k all in. 80 guests.

That's a lot of money that one could spend on A) better living B) better honey moon or C) buy her stuff for her house :P
