I think there is a running total for the current session, but it will probably be best to track your usage with v4me. If what you want is a breakdown of usage per machine then you need something like a proxy between the laptops and the router.
 
My big concern with the B970 router is also the usage.

Once I start using it for my laptop and PS3, you might run a huge bill without even knowing it - especially if you're not using prepaid.

I know you can set a limit on your account, but still....

Will have to research this properly.

  • Connect via wireless/ethernet to the B970 (**NOT USB**)
    telnet into the device (192.168.1.1 is the default ip)
    at the login, user is admin password is admin irrespective of what you have configured as a password
    then at the # type the following
    # nvram set ddns_cfg_enable=on
    # nvram commit
    # exit

Voila you now have the page enabled (Under advanced settings)......

CAVEAT : I have not tested the DDNS, You may also be missing the icon for the DDNS option (redX)

Finally had a chance to try this and I can confirm it works perfectly on the MTN B970. The icon on the Advanced Settings page is missing/broken but it works.

log onto the admin page
make sure ip address 192.168.1.1
make sure your settings are umts/3g
password = admin

if all fails reset your router .

To be honest, I'd use prepaid, and cancel a contract if possible. You have much more control over your spending then.

I am using a B970, if somebody hacks it, good for them, I lose a maximum of a 2GB bundle. That's far better than receiving a R10k bill at the end of the month.

Your usage can be effectively monitored on 4ME. No real need for a local bandwidth monitor.
 
I am looking at getting one of these units, the cheapest I found is R3134 :-(

Has anyone tested how good the WiFi is on this unit? The router will be upstairs and my PS3 will be downstairs around 12 meters away, I am hoping that it will reach.

Got it 6 months ago from MTN, Canal Walk, for R2,366.

From my experience the internal wifi antenna is limited, but you can connect an external wifi antenna which should make a big difference.

That connection for the external antenna is not for wi-fi, but for the 3G antenna. If you connect an external antenna on there, it will not increase your wi-fi range.

What you need to get is a range extender - Linksys Wireless-G Range Expander

I've setup one of these before and they work very well and improved the coverage throughout a very large house.

If you want an antenna to better your 3G coverage, then PoyntingDirect sell external antennas for the B970 router - High gain antenna with 7 meter cable

If you want to improve the wireless (wi-fi) coverage of the unit, you'll need a range expande - see above.

After some searching I am none the wiser. Is this connector for wifi or 3g? Manuals just describe it as an external antenna and various forums seem to contradict, incl this thread ... ?

Check the first post. It is for a 3G antenna (I know, I have one hooked up to mine) :D

I got my B970 last week, funny thing is that my e172 gives me a signal of -77dBm and when I plug in the b970 it gives me a signal of -91dBm. Any ideas???

Also make sure that you have not accidentally set the antenna to use the external connection (small black switch above the LAN ports).
