International sloooow

Webafrica SAIX has been slow all day, but is pretty snappy now that 5 o' clock has come and gone. I can't help but think that there's perhaps some major throttling going on over at SAIX? Or maybe it's just the decreased traffic after 5? Perhaps I'm just an idiot. This is still majorly annoying, had the same problem yesterday.
 
well Telkom or SAIX must be on strike ..... can't handle this anymore....I'm staring at hanging pages, and server GUIs with extremely sloooooooow response times and time outs....SA to Europe....what a joke. :mad:

Leaving my desk now ... I can't work like this.

I'll send them the bill for my salary.:p

If I report another fault they'll run out of fault report digits.

I own a property video website www.uchoose.co.za and was banking on the seacom cable makeing the video run without buffering, nothing after a month has changed, if anything things have got worse. We were promised so much with the cable going live but I do not see anything happening. My streaming server is in the US and when I was in the UK the videos ran so good I was thinking I would have to put a delay to stop the videos playing immediately, no problem here, - connecting to server 5 seconds, buffering 10 seconds then plays like a friggin slide show, jerking, then buffering again. It takes 25 minutes to upload a 7MB video, that's dial up speed! we have ADSL 4MB can anyone advise if changing my ISP from telkom to someone else will improve the ADSL speed? Is anyone experiencing speeds that is actually broadband?

Let's be generous and assume that the speed problem isn't some idiot at SAIX screwing up a router or unplugging a cable.:rolleyes:

Is there a simple traceroute we can do to see what connections are being used? I understand the "old" undersea cable terminates in Spain, so what would a traceroute look like to a Spanish IP near the cable landing point?

Where does the Seacom cable terminate, and what IP could we test?

Correct me if I'm wrong but if the "old" cable is not being used, then the traceroute would have to go via the USA or somewhere else, and there would be more hops.

Similarly with the "new" Seacom cable.

I tried doing a traceroute to my Hetzner web server in Germany, and the traffic appeared to be going via the USA, but I'm only guessing.

Are there any experts on this forum who can help us understand this muddle? At 4pm today I was having major slowness problems, but now it seems much better.
 
We should decide on one overseas speed test, and everyday at random times send in our results and try and find the best and worse ISP's of the month. These ISP's quote speeds which unobtainable and they should be highlighted for poor performance. I am sure my bb could organize it.

We got more cap this afternoon to see if it will make a difference. It did. Every site that I could access was working and all the sites that were working stopped working. I could access MyBB all afternoon. I know of the outage this morning.

Everything seems fine now, but it's still weird how getting more cap put everything in reverse like it did for most of the afternoon.
 
New week. Same problem since after 14:00. Time outs and increasingly slower speeds than normal. It sucks quite frankly.
 
I'm dying with my dsl line, with Webafrica, usually the service is reliable unless it's a national problem ie Telkom Service has been on the blink for the past 2 - 3 days, what's up ?? anyone know ??

Don't know. The silence from WebAfrica is also just as frustrating :mad:
 
Also Web Africa and Cape Town and slow all day and was also bad on Sunday... is the network being reconfigured with Tier 1 and Seacom?
 
I just contacted someone via IM at webafrica and they gave me 2 DNS addresses to add in that 'hopefully might solve the problem. Please contact us if you have any other queries.' It's not working though :(

How about adding the DNS servers here so the rest of the WA people with the same problem can benefit too?

Also try OpenDNS servers -
Primary DNS:
208.67.222.222
Secondary DNS:
208.67.220.220

My speed was fine for the last few days but today intl sites are loading slow again. :(

JEEZ ! Yesterday i speak with WA about the crawling speed of the dsl line and only today does a message get posted up about the slow intl browsing :( this sux !

They gave me the same 2 dns addresses you posted up, they're not helping at all :(
