Inverter/battery combo advice

Point is a solid LA 3 stage charger that is affordable.....

What battery are you charging and how long have you used it the charger. Is your battery still going strong
 
This one:

In use since 12 Feb 2015. Done around 50 cycles to 30% DOD for testing and backup when ESKOM throws a fit. No sign of any wear on battery.

R2,000 for this combo, best simple cost effective solution I've found so far, tested a few.

Gives about 5 hours to 40% DoD running 46" LED TV and DSTV PVR.

Made one for a mate who already managed to connect the electrodes the wrong way round. Just needed to pop 2 new car fuses in at R4 each and it was back up and running.

that inverter looks very suspect to me, but should be able to handle the load with just the tv and pvr. that battery is also unknown to me and it won't last 40% DoD with that load. you will probably drain it more to 80% imo.
 
Lead Acid discharge is between 5-15% a month depending on a number of things (temperature, original charge state etc, type of battery).
I think its highly likely "new" batteries will be in that sort of charge level after a month of non-use, especially after the end of summer.

A bit of a moot point though, we agree about the same recommendations.

Under high load the voltage will drop, but if you decrease load the voltage will increase.

The battery capacity is measured using voltage so this is normal.

the lady told me that the onyl difference is that it has a setting to charge it 26-28.8V (ADJ) variable.
The one that is available has no settings and charges only 28.8V

Does this make any difference @amongstthevotingfodder

Its called Peukerts law. Glossing over it somewhat, its only really elevant for Lead Acid based technology, as those have a Peukert value that isn't 1. Applies to batteries under load, not batteries that are not under load (as per the original posters info).

Yes it would. More than enough. Router and modem is Max 40w

Ok, so I used it for the first time last night. It was on 78% when I started using it. Is this normal for batteries that is brand new.

I had my 32" tv, surround sound, modem, media player and 3 lights on for 2 hours and used about 10% of the batteries. I put it on charge at 8h30pm until 6h30 this morning, meaning it charged about 30% in 10 hours on the rct charger. I did not want it to charge the whole day while I'm at work, so I disconnected when it was on 95%.

Which I could get a charger that can automatically switch off when charging is finished

If so, it's vital that you let the charger go through all four stages of the charge cycle, until it stabilizes on float. Anything else and you'll ruin your batteries in short order.

You mean when charging it when it's red. When on float the color is green am I correct in saying that.

So I ran it again this afternoon. Internet dead since this morning. So I ran my 32" LCD tv, modem, amazon fire tv and, external powered hard drive and my 5.1 surround sound system. I watched 2 movies on the tv. So after running it for about 3h30 hours, I checked the usage and it was on 71%. Is that usage normal to run all the stuff on my 2 batteries in series.

I thought it would probably pulled bout 20% or less. Maybe I could be wrong.
 
Next time let the bateries sit disconected for a half a hour then meusure the terminal voltage with a multimeter

Depends on the battery manufacturer. The batteries that he bought, assuming like mine, must have a Max 30A current on first use.
