iPhone 5 fails to be groundbreaking

There is a bit of a hom-hum, last year specs reverberating over the 5.

What has been quite telling for me, is my even my brother is now considering a non-apple device for his approaching upgrade. He has the iPhone 4, skipped the 4s and will not be getting the 5... will never get a Samsung either, but is now considering the Android options...

For people with the 4 it's maybe not a major upgrade, you get more screen space etc, but there are still tons of people who haven't had an iPhone yet and they'll jump on this! I think it's nice looking. Even though I said I wouldn't consider an iPhone, I still might!
 
The iPhone 5 was designed to compete with the Lumia 820, 920 is no competition.
 
Dont underestimate the speed of an iphone. They are seriously fast because they are optimized specifically for their hardware that doesnt change. Having said that Im done with iphones, so happy that I got an S3 and didnt wait for this.
 
As much as it "failed" to be groundbreaking, this phone will, no doubt, set new record sales.

I am not sure I get what you are saying. Are you saying the iPhone 5 competes directly with the Nokia 820 because if you are saying that then that is the truth. It is definately not in the same bracket as the 920.

I am particularly disappointed by the fact that the iPhone 5 has no NFC. I mean, LTE was the biggest announcement. Which marquee smartphone doesn't have 4G these days?

I doubt if the low light tech can compete at all with Nokia 920's PureView.

I agree to the fact that it wasn't groundbreaking. I think Apple has the right technology companies behind them to bring out a great phone. But they are just taking their time to get to that great phone, only small changes per year to maximize profit. A few inches longer and thinner this year and a few next year, a few small incremental changes to CPU or ram or etc. Just dragging it out.

Not really, the rumour mill pretty much predicted exactly what this iPhone 5 would bring to the table, from LTE, to 4" 16:9 aspect ratio to smaller dock, to its 7.6mm form factor, to the 2 tone aluminium finish, to the A6 cpu. Hell, even iOS6 has been out as a beta for the last couple of months for developers to play with so pretty much no surprises there either. iPhone 5 has been the worlds worst kept secret!!! Not sure why everyone is acting so surprised.

Yeah they've knocked the thickness down from 9.3mm to 7.6mm, weight from 130g to 112g. Throw LTE in the mix, a bigger capacity battery, a bigger screen, extra microphones for noise cancellation and voice recognition, 1gb of ram, A6 processor. The device has improved in every aspect. May not be revolutionary but if every new device was we would have to redefine the term.
 
It's amusing to see that a while ago all phones were measured against the iphone - and now it is the complete opposite.
 
Using a thin sliver of aluminium on the back instead of a chunk of laminated glass would bring down the weight and thickness, hardly an innovative technological feature ?

Well, you get secrets and then you get secrets.

People (myself included) are surprised because there were no secrets that were revealed yesterday.

I was expecting Apple to announce something that is appealing about the new iPhone - there was nothing.

So the surprise is that there is nothing even evolutionary about the device.

Unrealistic expectations. It's the same reason the S3 launch was considered underwhelming. People have unrealistic expectations based on what they read on the rumour mill.

EDIT: They had the specs down to the millimeter, screen size to the pixel. Nothing about this device has been a secret. iOS6 has been out for months....

Absurd. There's plenty that's evolutionary. Revolutionary, well, I'll agree that there wasn't anything revolutionary. I haven't actually seen a single revolutionary thing this generation - bigger screens isn't cutting it for me.
 
If with every release we were seeing revolutionary we would have to redefine the word.
