RPM, 8ta is 2300mhz TDD, device support is limited.

Secondly, there are two major 2100 bands for LTE, Band 1 (IMT Standard- Cell C) Band 4 (AWS - AT&T) The Ipad will probably support Band 4 as the US LTE market is the largest at the moment.

Long term forecasts do show takeup in the 2300 band globally by 2016, but primarily in Asia. There's very little chance of anything coming out of Europe or North America supporting the band soon.

For now, the best bet is to go with devices like the iPhone 5 (and equivalent generation Android devices with similar chipsets). These have been designed to try to address the early LTE market, which certainly includes the 1800 band in a number of countries. Most of Radio Region 1 (Europe and Africa) will eventually have a lot of 800 / 2600 as these new networks are rolled out using auctioned or digital dividend spectrum.

2100 MHz (the Region 1 version, which we use here) is heavily used for core UMTS/HSPA networks, and is unlikely to be a major LTE band for some time, since it requires extensive refarming for most operators. 1800 is much more likely, since it's refarming from 2G networks.

Obviously, the next iPad will support at least the same bands as the iPhone 5, and perhaps the additional popular Region 1 bands.

Not supporting LTE doesn't mean 3G suddenly stops working, so I'm sure they'll continue selling iPads.
 
Oh boy.. so we finally get LTE in the country only to find out there are like a thousand different frequencies it runs on?! They should've spent less time fighting over to call it 4G or not and more time and making it compatible with all.

When 800 and 2600 mhz is made available...then it will be compatible with all. But for now...the different networks have to make do with what they have and refarm where they can.

I do not think so. I can say for sure. Reason is not a lot of networks will be deploying LTE in the 2100 band. Think many will standardise on 800/1800/2600 band. I am not sure if our networks have plans for the 700mhz band? Will this be part of our digital dividend or only 800mhz?

This is some of the bands that up and coming LTE phones will support as a example:

Motorola HD:
LTE 700 / 800 / 1700 / 1800 / 2600

Samsung S3 LTE
LTE 800 / 1800 / 2600

Solution would be to buy a mifi router. Then you'll be able to connect to networks X, Y and Z without worrying about iWhatever compatibility.

The same would go for older products with 3G capabilities.

So the networks really are rushing into this and could cause confusion (I mean, the common public is stupid enough to not understand LTE in not 4G according to networks). Our current 3G is just starting to mature and be better (but still over congested at places), I think LTE will also have a rough start

Appart from the Ipad....The networks will only be releasing LTE devices on their respective networks that is compatible with their LTE network

That what I did an it saved me a few bucks :D Gonna do the Same when LTE mifi routers come available
 
Eish and I just took out a Vodacom data contract for my iPad 3. I was tempted to go the Cell C way and now I regret not. I will stay with Vodacom for iPhone 5 though because I am sure that they, being the market leader, will roll out LTE much faster than their competitors.
 
Has anyone used an ipad3 on LTE in SA?
It looks like cell c is the only network that supports it(possibly) but Im interested to know if it actually works.
