Saw the LA 40d550 new 2011 models at Makro going for R4999 and R5499 at game with a dvd player, but when i went to view they had no stock. But those where 50hz tvs, so i wasnt too keen.

Budget is around 6k atm, I know you wont get much for that type of budget, should i save up a little more then hunt around.?

You might be surprised at Samsung 5 Series LCD's motion handling. I have the LA32C550 FHD and I use it as a PC monitor. I play first person shooters and Starcraft 2 with no input lag or motion issues.

That said, when it comes to TV/SD/HD/sport/etc. there is no comparison to my PS42C450 HD Ready plasma.

However I can understand the problem of reflections. Thankfully I have a room that does not get much direct sunlight and is quite dimly lit, so the plasma really excels. Mine seems to have a anti-reflective coating which the new ones don't have. So unless you are prepared to use curtains/blinds, you may have to forfeit plasma. But you may be surprised at how well the LCD handles motion, so the only loss might be that it's 3" smaller.

TVs to consider are:

Samsung LA40D550
Samsung PS43D450

Stretching budget to R8k:

Samsung LA40C650 100Hz
Samsung LA46D550
Samsung PS51D450
Samsung PS50C550 FHD

Well, I just got the LA46D550 for R7.8k at Makro and I'm really enjoying this set so far. Warranted I haven't watched any sport on it yet but so far so good. It's so far ahead of my sinotec that I'm embarrassed to say I been punting the sinotec in the past.

I also got a 50" Sammy plasma in the lounge and the reflection is a pain as is image retention. It's a little older PS50A410 so maybe not fair to compare with the D550.

I must say as happy as I am I'm a little tempted to take the LA46 back to makro and exchange for the 51" plasma.

Just to say, for the sake of those new here who might misunderstand plasma, image retention should not be of concern, unless it's excessive static images one's working with, in which case one should have gone LCD. It's gone after a few seconds of changing channels/sources. It also only affects a very small percentage of newer plasma owners as IR and image burn-in have been drastically improved on. From my findings on this forum, the greater majority have experienced neither IR/IB-I in newer plasmas. A lot of it has to do at which brightness/cell lights settings used, which would be based on one's taste as well as the room and lighting.

I must say as happy as I am I'm a little tempted to take the LA46 back to makro and exchange for the 51" plasma.

Whats bothers me about plasma is the reflection thing, i dont like ambient light degrading the picture quality, and we mostly watch television with the light on, We also have supper in the front of the television. Im not keen on switching the lights on and off all the time to watch something.

What bothers me about lcd/led is the motion blur thing, as i cant afford a television thats 100hz and above which are normally pricey and higher end models.

My question is the plasma reflection thing a big issue or am i exaggerating?
Does motion blur affect things either than tv, can it have an impact on movies/series - xbox gaming?
Which one would be better suited for my needs? LCD/LED or plasma.
Also the couch is about 2m away from the sofa. What would be the ideal size? If i wall mount it i could get around half a meter more.

Lmao i meant to say couch is around 2m from the cabinet, and 2.5 metres from the wall.

I got the same TV to replace my old Sinotec too, yeah after watching the Samsung and putting it through it's paces I was like wow how could I think the Sinotec was fine.

Its not a matter of the Sinotec's being bad, the Sinotec is acceptable for what you pay for it. A friend of mine bought his around 3 years ago, i never saw anything wrong with it. It hasnt given him a day's hassle.
Also are you comparing apples with apples
Im certain if you compared the sammy's of yesteryear with the Sinotecs the difference isnt going to be earthshattering.

The new Sammy's are another story, its just more clearer, crisper and sexier of course.
 
Is it worth it paying a couple of thousand rand extra to get a 3D tv? From what I've seen in shops, the quality of the 3d HD movies aren't that great...
 
From personal experience i would say no. It makes the image darker somewhat, and i find the characters rather cartoonish. Oh and i wear glasses, so putting a glasses on top of a glasses is rather stupid and uncomfortable.

Problem is, Sinotec's and the other cheapies aren't as cheap as they used to be...

Yeah definatley, however it could be a possibilty that the top tier manufacturers have bridged the gap somewhat, Id recommend getting a reputable brand though.
 
In the past they were a decent choice as they were also almost 50% the price of the bigger tiered brands, but now you look at it and they might be 20% less? Also the Sinotec I had wasn't to bad it gave 3 years good service and will probably give my brother-in-law a few good years service too. Oh also comparing apples with apples my step-dad bought a Sony for R14k back then and it did obliterate the Sinotec I always just fobbed it off as well you paid R7k more then I did so I can live with mine.
 
Yeah the 47" Sinotec has been a bit of a let down for me. I've 2 at my business and 1 at home and 2/3 have given issues. Paid R8k for them 2 and 1 year ago respectively so pricing is keen, no doubt, but the pricing is qualified by the quality...

40" HD Ready Telefunken LCD is R3999.

Rather go for the Samsung PS43D450, it's selling at game for R5000, I was gonna get it today but had problems with my tv license, they didn't wanna sell me the tv, I'm going back there tomorrow and demanding to get that tv now!

Okay, watching the Super 15 final and my A410 plasma absolutely trounced the D550 LCD!!! I've actually been mucking around with the picture settings on the LCD for the last 20 minutes cause I can hardly believe my eyes!!! And that's disappointing cause I really believe this LCD's a superb unit!!
