LCD and Plasma Bargains

Initially I was in awe of the D550 but since Saturday's rugby I been 2nd guessing everything my eyes are telling me...

Will test later on -2 tonight when the golf starts.
Probably will be as well, we can compare notes.

BTW left out one other base assumption, the TV running in 1:1 pixel mapping mode, Size=Screen Fit.

Watching the golf, every now and then see a bit of ghosting on close ups of players faces depending lighting conditions/movement. Doesnt really bug me and I have to specifically look for it.

As a counterpoint switch over to the athletics on SSHD2, this seems to be a feed optised for 1080i, much sharper with zero ghosting.

It is still pretty noticable for me.

It does seem to be worst when you have a white ball or face moving against dark background. Watch out for guys wearing white caps.

Best place to see it is when a golf ball lands on a green, it makes a clear white trail.

The athletics does seem better but the pictures are much busier which hides the smearing effect much more compared to the plainer picture coming from the golf (general a quite uniform green background).

For interest sake, on the athletics feed you can clearly see the interlacing effect when a javelin moves through the air (not the LCD's fault, it is the interlaced signal - 1080i)

Can see it a bit on faces depending on lighting.

Am struggling to see this, have watch a few tee shots landing.

Watched a medal ceremony, pretty similar to golf, few people moving against a green field backround, and I can't see any ghosting/smudging here?

EDIT: Just watched a javelin being throw and there was no noticable corruption or any kind of trail on it (easy to see it rotating in the air).

Well this comes to my overall point. We're knit picking at variance from absolute perfection in FHD sport motion in reference to budget R5K+ 40" set. For the price I am not expecting absolute perfection, are you? Alternatively what do you believe would better in the R5K-R6K range, taking into account some wouldnt want to sacrifice FHD for non-sport application.

I was nearly convinced plasma is the way to go (and cheap!), but unfortunately there was a 46'' Samsung U series LED TV close to the 51'' Samsung plasma I was interested in.

Asked the guy to put a SD DSTV channel on the plasma and I saw the same channel was showing on the LED....and it looked so much better on the LED! (Blu-rays & DSTV HD, the LED just looked fantastic, and in a different league than the plasma).

So, I finally made up my mind....Im gonna save a bit more and get the LED.

Im not in the habit of replacing my TV every year, so when I buy something, I just dont want to settle for second best.

Real pity, cos it would have saved me a lot of bucks, but after seeing the Samsung LED, you just dont want anything else. :)

No such thing as U Series LED-LCD.

I strongly suggest going back and fiddling with the settings on both TVs, sounds like either the LED-LCD was higher end, and/or the plasma was [purposefully] set up badly, and/or the sources were of different quality.

Your findings sound like the opposite of what others report, so I cant take you that seriously, yet. You also don't mention model numbers.

Salesmen tend to put the LCDs and LED-LCDs on torch mode which obviously looks better to unsuspecting folk.

I just love it how people are easily fooled into buying an led tv. Shops always make sure the led is set to its best and leave the plasma on default factory settings, that way they can show off how much better an led is than plasma when all it takes is a few change of settings on the plasma and wham, that plasma will look equally good or better.

I was at cats digital and they had an led and plasma right next to one another, the led of course looked so much better than the plasma, I walked out of cats, went to game an bought that same plasma. Took it home, fiddled with the settings and wham, the picture was better than the led. I went back to cats digital and asked for the remote for the tv, the guy obviously refused because he knew wat I was gonna do. If I would have changed the settings on the plasma in the shop, people would have rather bought the plasma then the led cos it's cheaper and looks better.

Not saying that led isn't good, they great tv's, but it doesn't justify the price.

Roflol, wow, so naive. Ok u go buy that expensive led, and I will enjoy my 43" plasma that cost me 5k and equally as good as your led

Samsung UA40C7000

Lol, again, shows how much u know about tv's. That tv is gonna cost u an arm and a leg.

U is not the series. The UA is samsungs code name for LED, LA is the code name for LCD and PS is the code name for plasma. 40, obviously stands for the size of the screen, and the C7000 would be your series. So that tv is a series C, my tv is a series D, you decide which one is newer :)

I just bought the PS43D450 and could not be happier, was cheap, and has everything I need as a bedroom tv. SD content is great and HD is fantastic :)

Good luck with your 15k purchase :)

Lol, what's wrong with you? Why are you trying to defend your 5k purchase while making someone else bad? Of course the UA40C7000 is much better than your 43 Plasma, its FHD, 200Hz, has a 7 series engine, WiFi, apps... It costs a lot more but you get what you pay for.

I'm not trying to make him feel bad, that was not my intention, my intention was to inform him so that he may make the best decision based on budget and needs. If you are talking about picture quality, the plasma will beat the led hands down, in terms of features, well the C7000 will have more features, and as u said, u get what u pay for. For me, I don't need all those features, I just need a good tv that has great picture. And that's what I got, and I didn't have to waste money to get what I wanted.

Full Hd vs Hd ready, that's still debatable, I have yet to tell the difference especially on a 40inch and from my viewing distance.

200hz vs 600hz, hmmm, I wonder which one is better.

He is obviously not that clued up on tv's so I'm trying to save the oke money by advising to rather go for a plasma as he will be more then happy spending as little as possible while still getting what he wants. If he is after all those cool features then by all means go for the led, will be a good purchase. However if his sole purpose is for picture quality and not interested with all those features, then my recommendation is a plasma.

And I would just like to say, that if I came across as trying to put him down, I apologise, that was not my intention.

4 Series Plasma is not a 600Hz TV. Plasma technology itself is 600Hz which is the rate at which the dots are refreshed. But it is not the rate at which the picture is refreshed. The 4 and 5 series Plasmas are 50/60Hz TVs. Thus they are also subject to the same judder from 24Hz sources as the 4/5 series LCDs and LED. In other words, you will also have pulldown issues.

The benefit of the plasma is that there is no ghosting due to the 600Hz of TV. Take the golf ball over green grass which was brought up previously. The plasma is capable of refreshing the pixels at 600Hz (and not the input source) and handles quick changes of colour better. Thus the golf ball will look nice and clear all the time. An entry level LCD/LED is not as good at handling this quick motion. On some TV the flying golf ball will have a white shadow. I personally cannot see this on my LA46D550 but some people argue they can. I'll leave it up to your own eyes. The UA40C7000 is extremely good at handling motions due to a high quality panel and engine. The flying golf ball will look crip and clear at all times. Additionally the TV is 200Hz which means that there won't be any judder. The picture will look smoother.

So yes, the 200Hz LED is better than the 50Hz Plasma. Input/picture refresh matters. 600Hz refresh of pixels is inherent of the Plasma technology and has no benefit other than handling fast motion well. It doesn't refresh input source more often and it doesn't generate additional images. The 200Hz of the LED means that the TV generates additional images to make motion appear more smooth.

Further, its FHD. Nothing to debate. More resolution = better. I'll leave it up to you if you can make out a difference from where you sit. Maybe you can't. In ant case, the FHD certainly is no disadvantage.

The only diadvantage of the 7 series LED is that it is edge lit as far as I am aware. So there may be a bit of shadowing on a black image. Probably minimal and less than on my LCD

Samsung UA40C7000

That is a 7 Series LED-LCD... You were comparing with either a 4 Series or 5 Series plasma which probably costs nearly 1/3 / half, while still 10"+ bigger...

No one ever said a 4/5 Series plasma would beat a high end LED-LCD, such as in the comparison you've incorrectly made.

And of course SD TV will appear better on a smaller, high end LED, simply because it's high end and 10" smaller so less distortion! C'mon, think...

Compare apples with apples. Look for a 6 Series plasma, then we talk. Although once you've seen it, I'm pretty sure you'd be too embarrassed to show your face. :p :D

Enjoy it, great TV :)!

Promoting it after an in-store demonstration under blaring lights and on torch mode, without even finding out the needs of the OP... Eish. Try and care a little more about others before showing us how much of a fanboi you are!

+1, spot on.

Although Tim is correct about the 600Hz thing (although still misunderstands it) - it is marketing gimmick. The plasma has 10 fields of 60Hz.

What makes the plasma a winner is its lower response time, about 0.002ms IIRC.
