I'm in the market for 42" and my budget is around R6,000. I'm going to using it for HD-PVR (sport and movies). I'll need to plug my LG home theater (HDMI) and possible my media player (also HDMI but a USB port and the ability to play movies from external hard drive should mean I dont need that).

Any sugegstions? I'm in Cape Town BTW.

I'm open for LCD or Plamsa suggestions ;)

Well sport = plasma. And since you have HD PVR I'm assuming you will be watching SD TV, again = plasma. At the entry level, plasma > LCD.

Samsung PS42C430 = R4,699 - R4,999 (±20 forumites have bought this one over the past 6 months)
Samsung PS42C450 = R5,999 if you can find one (same picture quality, but has an extra HDMI port, USB media player, better anti-reflection coating, better menu, better remote)
Samsung PS43D450 = ±R6,200, think it has what the PS42C450 has but also has 3D (not that that would concern more people), Samsung's newer range, but don't know if you will find stock yet.

LG 42" is R4,999, but the Samsung's are more popular and rated better.

Thanks, PP

Probably a 60Hz LCD? 60Hz LCDs are bad at handling motion as one finds in sport. For sport you need 100Hz and up, and a 40" 100Hz LCD is more expensive than a 42" plasma.

Got the Sammy PS42C450 for wait for it...R5 199. This was at Cats in Sandton, not sure how it landed up at that price but it is and after going in originally to get the C430 and walking out with the 450 ive been more than happy with its performance.

So PostmanPot, as the official MyBB PS50C450 fanboi, will you be supporting the new PS51D450? Cats say they'll have them in by the end of the month at about R 9 000. What have you heard?

C430/C450 fanboi over similarly priced LCD*

I've heard the new Samsung plasma blacks are very good.

They can only be better...

Might as well get the PS51D490 which is a 3D tv. The D450 does not have 3D and the D490 is less than R10k from Samsungshop.co.za. That's what I am buying next month, can't wait. 3D gaming! Yeah baby!

Yeah that's if 3D appeals to you. Otherwise its a waste IMHO.

Ja, an eight grand, 51" LCD isn't an option, but the C450 was better than the C430 because of the anti-reflection coating, no? And the C550 wasn't up to the same standard. So it might not be as good as the C450, I guess we'll have to wait for the first reviews. Does the D450 have the same coating as the C450?

The D490 would be a waste for me; I tried 3D once, at the Sony shop in Eastgate, and hated it immediately. The fact that there are only 6 movies available in 3D doesn't help it's cause. Also, I'm a pirate, so until pirated movies are available in 3D, I've got absolutely no need for a 3D TV.

Has anyone ordered from samsungshop? Their price seems good, but their website looks like it's still in beta. I saw somewhere that they're linked to Cats, so I guess they're trustworthy.

Digital Experience in Fourways also sells the new D series plasmas, I posted the prices in the general lcd/plasma sticky

Hey drunkard. U must not be pirating top hard cause 3d movies are available for download in a variety of places.

I personally love 3d on my c750. Just gotta get a better pc too handle the 3d media so that jumping will stop.

Student in need of TV

Story first:
So I'm in my apartment working through the night and I have my CRT TV (from the mid 90s) on, I wanted something on in the background but music at times gets me pumped up and easily distracted. As I'm working my TV goes off and I smell something burning, fit to say the TV is dead. Should I it get repaired, am not sure at this point. I know there are two other CRT TV's sitting in the storage room back at home, err making that one as I remember one was giving to the maid and the other is a monster looking like TV.

Anyhoo to get on topic, I think I should get a very small LCD TV, on a students budget might I add you.
Saw this on the hi-fi corp website:

Anything similar, same price range or cheaper shall do :D

If that's what you can afford then it's a good price.

If you can afford a bit more you can start looking at a Hisense 26" and maybe 32".

I bought the LG 42LD460 at Makro and am very happy with it - HD channels on DSTV are fantastic, SD channels and sport are great.

Not sure. Definitely check in store. Sinotech LED back-lit LCD might have the edge with 100Hz.

Has anyone seen the Sinotech 32" FHD LCD on sale at Game this week? 5yr guarantee. Price: R3499. Any good? I cant find the serial number to find out a bit more about this set...
