How many okes cstill know how change gear with no clutch in a car. Legend

Yep. I had a clutchplate shear on the freeway, and changed gears (carefully) sans clutch till I got to the offramp. Unfortunately, I then had to stop, the car stalled, and I had to get towed.
 
My car collecting buddy can, tried to teach me but I'm not good at it. Drove 400km with the old 4speed slushbox today, relaxing but joh those shifts are slow by modern standards.

Stick it in 1st, and start it, carry on driving without the clutch. You get used to it after a while.
 
Nanny aid is what takes away from the driving experience. Turn everything off in a F type supercharged V8 and not many people can drive it. Because we lost the ability to drive because we relying on these electronics.

Put a race driver in any car and he will be faster when he controls the car with no electronic aid.

What crazy world do you live in? They might be faster on a perfect qualifying lap but there is no ways in any world that they would be as consistent as they could be with well developed aids. It's is simply not humanly possible since we make mistakes all the darn time.

And besides, what kind of crazy world do you want to live in where just to drive a car ordinary people are required to be near perfect under all conditions and situations on public roads? Gosh, might as well go back to riding horses then, zero aids there. And even if we had to strip out all electronic aids there have been huge advances in mechanical parts that compared to a mere 20 years ago provide oodles more control. Better tyres, suspension, stiffer chassis etc all allow for better control and safer cars. Down with mechanical aids as well then I say!!

So how far would you like to take this, do we need to strip aids from the design process too? Think it should be taken from the manufacturing process as well? Those darn factory workers have forgotten how to truly build a car amiright? How else can we ensure a 'true' driving experience?
 
Don't think many guys still know how to left foot brake. Or even how heel toe a pedal. Very few guys can really control a car once they switch of all there nanny aid.

Only time either of those should be used is on a track.

And then the issue of floor mounted pedal vs floating pedal often makes all the difference from one car to another.

The two statements are a little ironic though since the latter overrides left foot braking so you really need to figure out which you consider to be more manly.

And yet race cars have these driver aids these days although in a different guise and less intrusive.

Why? Because performance has outclassed humans and the technology makes the car faster.

I live on planet earth. So let me start by explaining what I am saying when I talk about NANNY AID. It will be things like :

The auto box where you have zero control. you down gear but the car feels the Rpm is to to high and over ride your decision.
Lane departure, auto braking are all things that a human should control. Drove with a person in stop start traffic. This person was texting while driving. When I complained about this to the driver he explained that the car will auto brake when required and I need not worry. So he is using an emergency aid as the cars normal brakes so he can text and not crash into the car in front of him. It made him a lazy driver. and a dumb one. Thank you nanny aid.

So I am talking about the electronic aid that DRIVES the car and can override a human.

Please explain how you call a tyre or a chassis a nanny aid????? Even the most modern tyre only gives a certain amount of grip. And I as a human decide how to control that grip. When I push to hard I loose traction.

You see the nanny aid ESP TSC and ABS will reduce power to override stupidity. Not the tyre but the electronics.

My Issue with nanny aid is that people loose the ability to drive, as those system are actually driving not you. People think they can drive and when in a vehicle with no the same aid or the electronics fail then disaster.


People are using what is supposed to be a safety aid like lane departure , auto braking and adaptive cruise control to text.

As someone with his 4th DSG car, i totally agree with you in terms of taking responsibility and awareness away from the driver. P.S. i have a mode that allows you to hit the limiter and it will not upshift for you, it also takes off abs and any form of TC. needless to say i will only use that mode on track lol.

Some cars (at least all four Hyundais I have owned) won't start unless the clutch is pushed in.

When I could still drive manual cars, I could change gears without the clutch - learned this quickly with a Beetle that went through clutch cables faster than I went through underwear...
