Massive free data increase from Vodacom

Sheesh, why are there so many of you getting upset over this? VC has basically just cleaned up some legacy products by changing/upgrading them to the current bigger bundle versions to simplify their terribly complicated set of contract options. While we kind of expect this it is still a good step from them indicating they are starting to take head of the market not accepting rampant pricing abuse and the demand for a simplified data pricing model.

They still have a long way to go, but this is a step in the right direction, so don't hate on it. Point out other areas for improvement, but why get upset about anyone on these contracts getting much more than they signed for.

I hope Cell C survive but if they do it will be without me as I no longer need to top up with an inferior product. Now if VC will rethink their OOB rate maybe some more past resentment can be forgotten.
 
To summarize mobile data market:

These Vodacom contract bundles compete directly with 8ta's R199 for 10GB and CellC's R189 for 5GB+15GB bundles. 3GB for R149 is not really a good deal. It is better than before however.

Regarding bolt bundles, Afrihost's R145 for 5GB now is the best value in the market. You have to have an MTN voice contract to regard it as bolt on though. If it's not linked to an MTN contract then the deal competes with 8ta's and CellC's bundles above which offers better value for money. Some might argue that Afrihost's month to month contract makes it better. However I'd rather pay a lower price per GB since I know I will use the data every month.

Otherwise, CellC's 3GB for R399 which lasts 12 months, is still the best bolt on data bundle for a someone who has a prepaid voice sim, and their 15c/mb data rate offers almost the same value.

Sorry I had to do that. I'm not perfect but this is a little elementary and too common.

But, I agree with you. VC and MTN can't hold people by the balls anymore. Price is king. Cell C and 8ta are upping the ante .

Everyone I know has issues with the S4 on Cell C data and calls, its all over facebook and twitter.
What am I missing?
I was told this is a good forum for techies, but your advice here is shocking.

Smart Standard 229: R229/m, 75 anytime minutes, 20 Weekend minutes, 150 SMS, 150MB data

Smart Small: R199/m, 75 anytime minutes, 200 SMS, 200MB data
Smart Medium: R299/m, 120 anytime minutes, 300 SMS, 300MB data

I'd go for the Smart Medium, it's slightly more per month but you get 45 extra anytime minutes and double the data.

Actually, based on usage, looks like the Smart Small might do the trick - has a bit more data.

Oh wait, that's not sideways, that's lower so I don't think I can do that...

Wait, dammit, none of those is OOB shark proof :(

Yeah, the OOB shark circles all voice contract users on all networks. Install an app on your phone that will limit your mobile data usage to your monthly bundle.

Give them a call and ask if you can migrate to the Smart small, they might allow it as it's not a massive difference and they want people to move to the newer smart plans away from the legacy smart plans.

Wish I could only spend R200/m on a cellphone contract and have it cover my usage. :/

My new phone already has 84 hours of calls on it and it's only 6 months old of which one was spent outside of SA with only SMS roaming.

its odd why such big increases for some packages, and none for others, imo a few megs extra to the 1Gb packages wouldve been nice too... perhaps its cos the 1Gb package recently had a price reduction if i not mistake?

Exactly, pricing have been coming down constantly over the years. This is to re-balance it again.

So if someone took a MyMeg 500 at R149 and a year later My Gig 2 was introduced at R149, why wasn't the MyMeg 500 automatically upgraded to a MyGig 2?

Good example of a post with absoutely no thought put into it, just an attempt to attack.

An existing customer (not a new one) is used to getting 500MB and might be going OOB. He now gets 3GB (5 times MORE data) and you somehow think this is a trap to get him to go OOB? The mind boggles. :rolleyes:

If anything, the biggest side effect of this effort will be the reduction of OOB usage. (Kinda what I promised Paul)

Think about it.
