hmmm

OMG, this guy can't even communicate properly, and he wants to setup a commercial enterprise?. I will say that I don't think this project will crash, because it won't even go live in the first place.

I can only say, what a plonker.

Looking at your sig, I think they renamed Ultimate Edition to Super OS. Its got the new 9.04 build. :)

Cool, a Neotel of the WUGs. I'm sure Neotel has some happy customers.... I say let them be, let the users choose. No need to bump heads. There is nothing to gain for the PTAWUG people. We/they are happy enough with our network. It's not about getting more users or winning or anything.

Btw, I have users connecting to my (PTAWUG) highsite who spent a grand total of R300. That's thanks to there being 2.4GHz coverage. I don't think the OP knows all that much about what PTAWUG looks like today. Which is fair, since it is becoming quite a complex network. But good luck and I for one wish you all the best, like with Telkom etc - a bit of competition is always great.. it keeps the big guys on their toes!

I agree with Densweep, if you have issues with a fellow wug member rather join the channel and sort it out. :)

Or, if you really want to, create a #braai channel and sort it out with a beer and a lekker braai :D

Ok, so you lost me when the posts switched taal, but your responses pissed me off (yes, I'm talking about you, wuggers) so I'm going to respond anyway.

Your method of running a club (yes, you are running a club) is very unusual, and given that you've got several hundred members, I'd say reckless and in no ones best interests. I doubt it will be very long before the whole thing comes crashing down in a pile of accusations, alleged fraud, favoritism and nepotism. There is a reason why almost every other club in the country runs as a S. 21 company, complete with a committee, transparent finances and meetings for members to vote on proposed activities. Your kickbacks from the equipment suppliers are going to come back and kick you in the arse. How long do you think it will be before members start questioning where the money went, who decided what to spend it on, and who got the contract?

I can fully understand the OPs point. Despite what you might believe, most people want independence; they don't want to brown nose a "core team" member in an IRC channel in an effort to get their high site completed. And, this is at the risk of being flamed, or if you run into Daffy, being told "I'll personally make sure that you never become a member of the WUG". No, I'm not papsnoek, but I was lurking in the IRC channel when this incident, and others have happened. Most people would rather pay annual subs of a few hundred, or even a few thousand rand to have all the nagging eliminated. This is how clubs are run. If you don't like it, continue what you're doing (for however long it lasts) but don't get all uppity when someone comes along with an idea to do things the right way.

As for your apparent claiming of the ISM bands for yourself. **** you. Those bands are free for anyone to use. There's probably more money changing hands in your WUGs than some small businesses, so who's a "commercial venture" then? Non profit doesn't mean no fees, as any accountant will tell you, so my interpretation is that a S. 21 association CAN be a WUG, and stands a better chance of survival than your loose group of kiss-ass members and power mad core team.

Good luck with your first attempt at a WUG, it's proved how useful a cheap network can be, been a great technology testbed, and I'm sure you've had a lot of fun, but if you're not willing to formalise the association, someone else will.

I can speak for CTWUG and say we run a Commitee and have meetings every 2 months where the users get to vote on proposed activities. Finances is run by our treasurer and all the details about our kickbacks, donations and equipment purchases is freely available on the internet at http://finances.ctwug.za.net

As for the OP, I do not believe thats bashing each other on a forum will solve any thing. If you want to do you own thing then so be it, good luck with it. Just remember that the wuggers have great knowledge of wifi as we have been doing it for a few years, so rather than bashing us ask for help.

PTAWUG also have wugmeets, and even non members are welcome to attend these meetings. We are a community, therefore there is no 1 person responsible for the finances, so if there is any fraud, it would involve dozens of members. Our finances are freely available on the WIKI, where all members can examine it. It is not available on the internet, if you aren't a member, it doesn't concern you.

All PTAWUG finances are spent on the network infrastructure, with no reserve, so as a "company", we would be going bankrupt every month!

As for the core-member issue, yes any community wil always have those members willing to do more, give more of their time etc. However, any member can become a "core member", some have joined PTAWUG and proceeded to become admins (our name for a core-member) within a week or two.

"I'll personally make sure that you never become a member of the WUG"

daffy would never say this - he is a gentlemen and a scholar.
Him, more than any other person, knows that WUG is a community effort.

Despite what you might believe, most people want independence; they don't want to brown nose a "core team" member in an IRC channel in an effort to get their high site completed.

Why would you need to - putting up a highsite is awesome! ANY member of any WUG encourages it! It's the best way to expand - more coverage. I think you might feel that no one wants to help you - maybe the reason for this anger. ASK!

There is a reason why almost every other club in the country runs as a S. 21 company, complete with a committee, transparent finances and meetings for members to vote on proposed activities.

This was brought up and we voted on the subject - afaik we are getting our ducks in a row as far as setting up a section 21 association is concerned but are still investigating to get the complete picture.

Seriously now, why are you so angry - come in and chat to us.

I have been a member on ptawug since october 2007 now.
With regards to the rebates, Dawie aka protskrog is VERY transparent on what money goes where.
There is a rule that no more than a certain percentage of a highsites required money is allocated from rebate funds.

Now as i type this extra slowly for you to understand:
this is MY OPINION AND NOT THE WUGS, i think that policy is very fair, perhaps "too fair."
The way I see it is that the account at Scoop and Miro belong to their respective owners, this information is on the wiki and internal to the wug.
As such, I'd go as far as to say that the owners of the account are welcome to spend the money on pizza and beer over the weekends as they provide a huge service.
The accounts at the dealers belong to them, they LET users buy at COST, infact cost in bulk quantities, users get to buy at the 10+ price from miro even when purchasing single units.
These funds, again still MY OPINION, are seperate and unrelated to the individual users.
HOWEVER as upstanding members of the wug the money is allocated to highsites.

Getting to this and pointing out again that there is a maximum percentage per project funding from the rebate money.
I think the way it is managed is perfect.
New projects are posted on www.ptawug.co.za
and then we have our own wiki internal to the network where this information is echoed and more in depth
the amounts each person donated, how much total rebate funds have been granted, how much of it is currently sitting in the account, how much has been used and for what it has been used.
There is a list of donation amounts from each member and when the member donates they choose which project it goes to.

You have no idea how the things work yet you come here and make accusations looking to cause crap.
And knowing the hardwork that many of the people put in to get the network to the point it is now your comments are rather insulting.

Next time you want to intefere with other peoples lives atleast have some facts on your side.

Furthemore with regards to the OP, i promise you collecting money from people on a monthly basis is a mission.
You admin fee/bank fees on collection of your measly R20 will not get you anywhere apart from frustrated and agitated.

PTAWUG is awesome!!

If the users on the wug wants a section 21, then they do it!!

If they want to launch their own satellite , then they do it!!

All that the admin (core) team is doing, is just that,... doing. The admin members are the workers, they just do whatever they are told!!

:)

It's been working for longer than two years, and the network is growing everyday. I think the system is working brilliant. They should model other communities on this system as well...

About brown nosing admin members. I spend allot of time everyday helping ppl connect etc. With NO REWARD, NO extra power, no privileges... Why? Because its fun, and it is fun contributing and it is fun learning!!

Stop flaming and come check it out yourself!! If you want, you can also be part of the admins... (I am not in IT, and I'm an admin member)

:)

well i can say that the guys i have been in contact with from the PTAWUG are LEGEND!!! They are commited to what they do. They are always willing to offer up their time for someone else...

Well once i get moved then i can also join in, (Which i am quite looking forward to)

OK, this is starting to get completely out of hand and the thread will probably be removed soon. Haha!

If someone wants to start his own "WUG" and not consult/discuss/liase whatever with existing Wugs, do his own thing, then leave him be. ONLY if he transgresses, ie. breaks the law, can something be said or done by appropriate authorities. He has his ideas and we have ours. Let it be and I wish him success with his venture, as it is not an easy road.

Attacking PTAWUG on how things are run is simply silly. PTAWUG is a open and honest group of guys and gals. There is no hidden agenda being planned, no money being pilfered into private pockets or anything like that. The funds that are generated from rebates isn't actual cash (to my knowledge) received, but rather just a form of credit with the two suppliers. So no cash van actually be "lost/stolen" to someone by accident. And money that is donated to the WUG for projects is just that, a DONATION! No one is made to give money or time. And when such actual cash is given, there is a very transparent process followed. It is stated what is being bought and where it's going to be used. So what is the problem?

But overall, I think just let this slide. If you can't give some helpful advice here to TechnoMonkey and his venture, then rather keep it to yourself, because now it's just turned into a petty, childish mud slinging match.

Watch this space!! (Excuse the pun)

Just need a sponsor, and then we unleash the collective brains of the wug on the project!!

Soon we will have MoonWUG

The idea of the WUG not belonging to anyone might sound radical but it seems to have worked well so far and I can not see why it needs to change. The fact that no-one makes a profit is what makes it work so well.

As soon as money gets invokved it'll go to the dogs. Keep running things the way you guys are doing it at present.:D
