Hey PpL

So we're starting up a new WUG in Pta in the Moot area but will be expanding to other areas of Pta later on..

We are running independently, not partering up with Ptawug, Jawug, etc..

We'll be using the 802.11n hardware with custom antennas as to eliminate interference from other 2.4ghz networks in the area and to gain optimal gaming speed & latency

Costs will be around R20 per month - We have strict filtering..you pay the membership or hit the road - and we are planning to be up and fully running by July 2009.

No thanx ProtZkroG and SaLMaKLaK we don't want to join PTAwug...

People in the Moot area interested in joining can email [email protected]

Please feel free to post tips/comments

All 'bout costs.. And ass attitute of many of the members..

what costs?

And from what i can gather most of the members are actually quite nice...

Unfortunately i would never support you cause whats the actual chance i can have a nice game or so on? with enough players?

/switches alert on
i think you got burned by ptawug
/switches alert off

if you ask R20 a month, you are not a non-profit community wifi network, you are a commercial network and not a wug at all.

oh ja, and 802.11n uses 2.4ghz (and 5.8), just not the normal 20mhz bands, but 40mhz

if the equipment was so expensive, why do we have 410 members in Pretoria, biggest wug in the country, and there are people using Ubiquity Nanostations or other equipment to connect, just not the RECOMMENDED kit - if you can pick up PTAWUG using a soup can and a piece of wire, you can connect (and you dont even have to pay anything!).

and if the members from PTAWUG had such a crap attitude we would not work well with Jawug, CTWUG, DWC, etc...

Why bother, the moot area is already fully covered by ptawug, and besides 802.11n is still in draft...

Oh, and protzkrog is right, if you are gonna charge money, each member will have to have a radio license.

I will be very curious to see what that R20/month will give the users ?
And how did you get to R20 ? and who is going to be financing the back-haul network ?

Me personally i prefer to be involved in a Community project.

bwahahaha.
How long before you get shut down for not having a license and charging on the network.

I agree with DagegeN. If you have cash to donate then do it, if not then dont. R20/month will just be a waste.

Just a few replies...

>>> we wouldnt want to partner with you if you charge money for a service. We dont connect with ppl who are not community based.

>>> yep, still a draft, comes out early next year hopefully, uses more spectrum, and I havent seen new custom antennas either, no wonder you want money, cuz the new stuffs gona be way expensive.

>>> PTAwug IS FREE and we are community based. We dont throw ppl off or vote who should be part of the network. If you want to be a part, you can be, no probs.. And I hate it when ppl use free spectrum for commercial stuff. Get your own spectrum.

We work on a donation basis, you give wat you want. Its fine if you give nothing. You can also help other ppl to give back to the community. Or help with the expanding of the network.

You cant really charge for the service, since everyones performance will be different. And ppl are gona start moaning when there problems.

And youre not gona give anyone what ptawug can give you, not at this stage. Unless you share internet, but good luck with the license.

Dude this is a very bad idea. This network of yours is never gonna happen, why pay R20 a month to connect to 10 members max if you can pay R2000 onetime for your own equipment,if you can buy proper equipment allowing you to expand the network and connect to 410 members plus the Jawug network. Good luck with this though, youre gonna need it.

Oh, your users also gona have to buy their own n draft equipment, expensive... lol

But why? All the reasons you gave have no validity. No one is forced to use recommended kit. There are no monthly fees or costs. There is no obligation of any kind.

Also, if you are going to charge people money for a service, then they are going to expect a level of service. And if you can't deliver on your promises, then you are opening yourself to possible legal situation. I would insist on a contract saying what I will get for my R20. And when you don't deliver, lawsuit. Not worth it.

Why would people pay R20 per month when they can join PTAWUG which offers more in terms of users and experience for FREE?

As to the licence thing, I'm sot sure about the legal goings on there, but even though ICASA might be fools, if they line you up their sights, let me know how that works out for you. They have got slightly more than R20 a month to play with to come after you.

I suspect you have had a bad experience with PTAWUG or one or some of its members. If so, rather come and speak to the guys and lets sort it out. PTAWUG has no desire to petty or make a scene. I applaud the initiative, but it's not just already been done, but it's already been done in the area you are proposing. SO what are you going to offer thats not already there, free of charge?

I agree with Densweep, if you have issues with a fellow wug member rather join the channel and sort it out. With the other points Densweep made, I cant realy see what is so different to your network than with Ptawug, but hey feel free to do what you want, your choice. :)

I'm connected to PTAWUG for 3Months now, I have no problem donating between R100 and R1000 per month for new highsites and upgrades.

But if you ask a fee then there is a "owner" of the network and all of the rules will be defined by this "owner" and THAT SUCKS.

PTAWUG broads itself in "every one has equal rights".

Correct me if wrong, wouldn't 802.11n equipment be more expensive then the currently used equipment? Seeing that this technology uses MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) standards?
