MTN Uncapped Lite for R299

Uncapped with a Limit
A capped deal masquerading as uncapped deal to woo unsuspecting people. ASA should have this deal revoked and renamed. Its just like 4Gs from Cellc.

Please let us know the progress of your ASA complaint.

I just called MTN to double check on this and the guy that I spoke to said that after the 3GB, the speed will be throttled but also you will be charged at 29c per mb on a seperate invoice. Can anyone confirm this

I'm sorry if i missed something here, but could somebody please confirm this for me.

The day when I phoned to verify the use of the word 'uncapped', the lady in the call center said that there are no additional charges after the 3 Gig is finished. I phrased it in as many ways I could to make sure she totally understands what I was asking. Also, when I did the telephonic application I asked the guy repeatedly and he also said so. Nowhere in that +-15 minute telephone conversation was anything mentioned about a separate invoice and 29c per megabyte. I completely understood the throttling, which is fine. How on earth then can this be advertised as uncapped?

I responded after seeing this myBB news article:

In July this year (2011) MTN slashed the price of its Uncapped Lite package from R749 to R299, and reduced the price of its Uncapped Pro service from R1,999 to R899.

No way this package would have been R749 before it was slashed to R299 if it only gave you 3 Gig.

I would certainly not have taken the deal and cancelled my current subscription with iBurst if this is the case, and if so, it should be considered utterly dishonest advertising!

YALP!

Okay, so was a little paranoid and I phoned again to verify. They confirmed that after the 3GB only the throttling applies, and no additional price/MB or separate invoices. I'm interested to know who jpmonster spoke to at MTN. Give me a heart attack, whydontcha! :D

Anyone here with an update on the uncapped? Speeds, GBs etc?
Really interested in this...

Out of bundle

You guys will seriously give me a heart attack about the 39c OOB rate. I have checked the MTN web site under the internet section, but cannot find any additional tariff information. The only information I can find is about throttling the speed after 3GB.

Does anyone have confirmation about this?

Logic must tell you there's no OOB because you can't go OOB, it's uncapped!

Yeah, but some posters were causing confusion by saying that it's not really uncapped and that there will be a OOB charge on a separate invoice. That's enough to cause some concern for people who just took up the contract and went over the 3GB limit.

ok so just to be sure, the MTN uncapped for R289 a month is a 24 month contract and from now till jan or feb 2012 you dont get throttled and after jan or feb 2012 when you use 3gb it will throttle you thereafter to 128kbps? That speed alone sounds better than my 384k line i have at home isnt it? i rather cancel my afrihost and get this then, but the only problem i think ill have is the 24 month contract.

That's the BIG news that all of us would like to know. And we'll know after February 2012 whether we will be throttled to those speeds, or they coming up with varied packages etc, if we are throttled to 1Mbps I'd say that the 24 month contract is kinda worth it.

Its working

Well I got the lite for the R299 at the end of August. downloaded the first 3 gig (baiscally updates on Win 7 and Sql server etc) and was then capped to 128, which was a bit of a pain.
Then got the next 3 gigs and i see that sinse yesterday I passed the 3 gig "cap" but they have not throttle me down to 128. Im downloading and its showing on Firefox download speed of 500 kb/sec but on the mtn online its showing about 6 - 7 Mbps. Not sure what is right, but downloading 189 MB file from youtube in about 8 mins.
So full speed ahead, and already in the 2.5 months downloaded 15.5 gigs.
Overall not a bad deal this

You know there's a possibility for it to be throttled at again 3GB, 128Kbps, early next year?

How much of a pain?
Un-browse-able?

Pure pain! Rubbish. I tell you. Rather insert the sim card in your phone for mild Opera Mini browsing. You don't want to even leave your PC to download overnight trust me.

Hi Khanya
Yes, I lived with the 128 for the last 2 weeks of last week. I'm actually using it more for LearnDevNow videos, a bit slow as they say at least 300, but it still works.

Just to add, did the speed test for it now,
Download 1.7Mbps, Upload 1.12 Mbps.
& Download 3.3 MBps, Upload 1.10 Mbps
& Download 3.27 MBps, Upload 2.9 Mbps
& Download 3.54 MBps, Upload 1.64 Mbps

So happy at this stage... Well till next year, but I think at that stage they will not sommer revert back to 128, well I hope not, but i can still live with it.
Till then at least I download a few things from the net per day, instead of just one or 2

300 what? Are you actually aware you're not throttled after 3GB during this period?

It realy depends on what you browse and download. Not that a bit a pain, facebook sort of ok, not everything was downloaded instantly. Yahoo and email was also ok, but i did get some errors on yahoo with mails not loading, timeouts. but again not that major. if you stick to fb and emails, i dont really see a problem, but as soon as you hit the flash sites, then it becomes more of a problem...

yes, i saw that they are not throtttling this month, i went pass my 3 gig yesterday and so far have downloaded about 10 gig just for this month.
