MWEB Uncapped ADSL - Official Q & A

Dear MWEB,

What is happening to all your current customers who are on 384kb DSL capped accounts? I do believe we are currently paying more for our cap than what your uncapped costs. Will we be moved across to uncapped automatically at the new rate or do we have to apply?

Not sure about 348kb but we are on a 4mbps account and got an email that we will be upgraded to the uncapped service by latest end of april.

I have a question pertaining to reasonable usage. On a 4mbps line what is acceptable usage as far as Mweb management is concerned. Naturally as close to 1kb as electronically possible but, seriously, what are our boundaries and at what point does the red flag start getting waved? 10gig? 100gig? 200gig? 500gig?

Hi sspurious,

Correct, no need to deal with Telkom. Should you wish to switch your ADSL line rental to MWEB also, we will do all the liaising with Telkom.

MWB.

Hi MrMweb

I've been given one of the free accounts, but have signed up already (with a rebate for april). Whats the story if I was to change my line to you guys from a Telkom Closer package? Would I need to cancel that first before you start you liaison with the dark side (Telkom)?

Regards

im thinking they cant give specific data amounts because its a shared service, abuse is metered by load not data, so its both uncapped and not uncapped at the same time, they should be more directly open about this specific nature of the beast IMO

I think the basic 'abuse' that they are trying to disallow is one person on the network (the small 20:1 contentionratio network) from running multiple download threads on different computerssuch as torrents, movie streaming, http downloads etc all at once making the network unusable for the other 19 people.
There is no limit per se on your data just as long as you don't put it under huge stress.

Especially during peak time when every one uses it. I don't think they will mind if you download large amounts of data after 10pm.

how many locations can i use the same access details from ...how many concurrent connections

Dear MWeb,

1) Will the client have full admin access to the router supplied in the Uncapped Business deal?

2) Why the need for shaping on the capped accounts. The account is already restricted by bandwidth allowance, so why the need to restrict how the client uses his bandwidth? Think about it - it just does not make sense!

3) Are any bigger packages going to be available (eg 5GB, 10GB) for the capped accounts?

Hi Franna,

1. Unfortunately no, its a managed service that starts at the Ethernet port of the bundled router, however one can choose from 2 different options on how MWEB configures the router (a) the router is configured as the border NAT device where MWEB is responsible for all NATing, filtering, port forwarding etc. cfg on the behalf of the customer, or (b) the router is configured as a pure forwarding device (no NAT, filtering etc.) with the static (public) IP range applied to the Ethernet port. This allows a customer to put their own router/firewall behind the bundled router to fully control NAT/filtering etc.

2. Not sure if you are refereing to the consumer (Connect) or Business products?

3. For business there are 2 large cap option avaliable (50GB & 100GB) in situations where the Uncapped pricepoints are not suitable (i.e. need 4096 but not uncapped). Both options are unshaped like the other Business Uncapped products.

basically its marketing true uncapped not technical true uncapped

Mweb, I was looking at your application form for ADSL data accounts, can you explain why you need to provide a payslip with your application? What if you work for yourself?
Hi deweyzeph,

It would be best if you called us to discuss with a sales agent ... 08600 32000

Hi Mweb

1. Can the customer use his/her own router?

2. Do you need to provide a payslip for a month-to-month 384k uncapped adsl account?

Regards

Libs

PS - I left mweb yonkers ago because of your high pricing - now I'm tempted to sign up for the uncapped 384k ADSL package... :)

MWEB, How about an email explaining exactly what existing customers can expect eg will they automatically be upgraded to uncapped? etc
Hi TonyA,

Am seeing if I can provide that, in the mean time you can PM me what package you are on and I will find out your migration options.

MWB.

Hello MWEB

Do you guys have reseller..can I resell this product

Will the consumer 4mb uncapped package be unshaped on the weekends ? Meaning, will we get full line speed on the weekends because they are considered 'after hours' ?
Hi Natedogg,

'act' would be a better description than 'be'. As per my response here ....

http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...th-from-MWEB&p=3714715&viewfull=1#post3714715

... the demand for priority traffic should be lower over the weekend, thus non-priority protcols (torrents & news) should be able to achieve best speeds (obviously we cannot guarantee line speed as this is influenced by many factors beyond our control).

what happens to the router after the 12 month contracts does it belong to the client or MWEB

MWEB, I am currently on a 384k line from telkom and am looking at the all inclusive 512k option.
I plan to only have the account activated on the 1st of april, how will I go about ordering, will I have to make a note that the line must be upgraded or will this automatically be done for me?
Also, how long will the migration + upgrade take.
Thank You!
