MWEB Uncapped ADSL - Official Q & A

Hi MWEB

I qualified for the first 1000 special offer of next month uncapped free, or R299 discount off of the 4Mb offering.

I signed up for the 4Mb uncapped today as I could not wait. :)

Will the R299 be taken off my next months bill?

Hi MWeb, it bugs me that you keep misrepresenting the truth. Your package is SHAPED, 24/7.

Don't compare it to acting unshaped or whatnot, it is shaped. Period.

Hi Pilgrim,

The reality is that all shared broadband services globally & locally are technically shaped, do you honestly believe service providers just turn off all traffic management policies & safeguards over the weekend and hope for the best?

What does change during periods of the day/week is the relative capacity allocated to the different classes of traffic. Adding more capacity to bulk download classes during off peak times effectively lowers their contention ratio allowing them to 'act' in an unshaped manner (i.e. probability of speed reduction due to congestion is reduced).

Thus all statements regarding whether a product is shaped/unshaped (at a certain time) are about the practical effect of shaping (bw mgmt policies) at that specific time rather than whether they exist or on not.

Your analogy of "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one" is flawed.
Please explain how it is flawed?

But I suppose this will still not stop you from trying to get people to think that your product is "unshaped" after hours.
Refer to the above.

Rapdishare is not P2P its normal web port 80 download but some ISP's tend to shape it because its got a bit of a bad name for people downloading pirated stuff from it
Hi killkom,

Carrier-class bandwidth management systems, as deployed by MWEB, are a little more intelligent than just watching port numbers. So yes download from Rapidshare & most other 'Once Click Hosting' sites are identified and put into the non-priority traffic class, without affecting general http/https browsing.

It seems that I cannot get more than 180Kbps even with Http, speedtest.net etc.
Im not at home until Monday but what could I do to improve this?
Do I call the call centre etc?

With the other ISP's Im getting +- 420 kbps.

Probably the wrong thread to ask in but im just curious :)

Weird..Getting full line speed (4mbit) on well seeded torrents here. As well as HTTP

If I'm not mistaken, they will probably expand that list as they see you download from certain domains or IP addresses. So even if you subscribe to a lesser know host they will shape it. It's quite nasty of MWEB but not to worry - if they shape it too much we will let the world know - or at least post it on this forum. This service is UNSHAPED only for minor browsing and email. For any binary data file transfers or streaming they will shape it. Of course once unusable people will leave - then again they'll get rid of their heavy users that way. It's a good tactic.

Thats why im asking if I should log a fault or something?

My other Three accounts work at full speed 100%

I cant stream a vid off youtube and then listen to some streaming Winamp at the same time etc.

Just curious as to why im the only one :( hehe

Well, it's like I said from the start. Just reading through the Terms and Conditions gives you the idea that this product is not designed for power users or heavy downloaders. Mweb has put measures in place to prevent that kind of behaviour. I think more and more people will come to realize this and will migrate back to the packages that allow them to download properly. I'm staying on my IS backed account for now. I have spoken to several people in the industry and they have confirmed that IS is better suited for power users and that the Mweb network will suffer if the heavy downloaders try to use the network 24/7.

That is weird.... And I suppose you tried rebooting your router and that...That sucks man.. Hope u get it sorted!

Well like I said, im not at home im in Plett right now. Using the account at our house here but its only a 384k line Bleh so I cant test it.

But when I signed up Thursday the MAX I was gettin was 180 MAYBE 190, but thats it :(

If I cant get it right I guess its time to Cancel :(

Im temped to switch over from my axxess account but il definitely wait a month or two to see how badly the service has degraded.
Just wish axxess would bring a price cut atleast to their existing products. It would be great if Telkom would introduce uncapped though...

As a company, either internally or from a technical perspective, what metric are you running the network on, ie. your "network mission statement" for example:

"Our intention is to have a network that has the best performance for gaming, browsing, e-mail, streaming, etc, better than all the other ISP's out there".
Hi Tharaxis,

I believe I've explained it in this post ... http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...th-from-MWEB&p=3714715&viewfull=1#post3714715

PS: I've also tried to answer your PM as best as I can.

Whilst i fully agree with you MWEB I do need to point out that you are adding to the confusion, as elsewhere in this thread you stated

While I'm at it, let me re-itterate the benefits of the Business
packages over the consumer ones (i.e. why you're paying more) ...
The business product is unshaped.

Unfortunately the vast majority of South Africans think that Data comes in bundles not down pipes, and so have little concept of load sharing. They see shaping as a restrictive practice to force you to pay more rather than a management tool to optimise a network.

Your New Product is great, but your biggest problem is going to be reeducation. It will take a long time for South Africans to realise that they don't have to download an entire FTP archive when they have the opportunity too, just in case they may need a file later.

We have not had true Internet in SA and shifting definitions of Broadband, Bandwidth, Shaping and Contention have been used as lies and marketing tools.

It is time to reeducate, otherwise you will end up in a situation where only high bandwidth users move to uncapped and low bandwidth users stay on cheep packages with other ISP.

If that happens you will have nothing left to balance.

Hi caroper,

Yes let me expand on this a bit. MWEB states that its Business products are unshaped because we've engineered them to behave (act) that way.

The Business products are goverened by a different set of bw management policies (from the consumer Connect ones) which do not classify traffic into priority & non-priority classes. Ontop of this, and here is the important part, the bandwidth pool allocated to the Business products is quite a bit larger relative to the number of active users. This results in a lower effective bw contention ratio where the probablity of rate reduction due to inter-customer congestion is far lower.

Hope this clarifies the difference.

Let's just everybody relax

Hi guys,

<rant>
I think we all need to just relax about the shaping "issue". Everyone is getting themselves absolutely hysterical about MWeb shaping the service as though they are intentionally doing it to irritate users. If you don't like the shaped service, take one of their unshaped services. I use a variety of protocols and I would like an unshaped service, but for my money, I'm happy with the shaped service. Imagine the result if MWeb were to remove the shaping. Everyone downloading 200GB per month of "game patches" would torrent the living jeebus out of the line. Web surfing and email would suffer and the MWeb support desk would collapse under the load and the whole ADSL industry suffers. The service is CLEARLY marketed as a shaped service. If you take it, expect that some of the protocols will be shaped dynamically some of the time. For the money we are paying for uncapped, I hardly think we can complain. I really see MWeb's offerings as a watershed moment in this country. Don't be greedy and unreasonable if you are not able to completely and utterly hammer the living daylights out of your line 24/7/365. Everyone would like a slice of the pie and MWeb ensures that this happens in the most equitable way possible -- as is the case with most, if not all, ISPs locally and internationally. I'm getting tired of the incessant bleating and complaining about shapping as if MWeb is intentionally doing something in an underhand way. I don't download 200GB of "game patches" every month, but I do have an uncapped account and I would *also* like it to work quickly and reliably when I and browsing or downloading. Share nicely and play nicely. Let's just everybody relax and enjoy the fact that for the first time we have affordable, reliable, UNCAPPED broadband access.

+1

No need for big hard drives, watch your program/movie you downloaded and delete it, it will be there tomorrow if you need to get it again. .. it will be there tomorrow

MWEB gave us the internet no need to download and save it, let someone else do that
