Shaped?

Does anyone know what the times of shaping is, coz i left work about half an hour ago, and still my 4 mb uncapped account was downloading @ 70KB/s on torrents??

Hi All,

I've received feedback from engineering.

We experienced an unexpected peak in demand for priority capacity this afternoon (related to the migration of our current base) which necessitated a temporary reduction in the size of non-priority bandwidth pool to prevent degradation of the service as a whole. We are expecting to have additional capacity online very soon (should have already been in but we are at the mercy of the provider) which should elminate the need to take such steps in the future.

I just signed up with OpenWeb, I'm assuming that since they are reselling your accounts, I can speak to you and your Mweb support team etc. etc.

I would just like to find out if my account will be activated tomorrow, as it is currently pending, and if I will be charged pro-rata.

Hi bobbles,

Its only 7:30 odd, as demand for priority traffic subsides into the evening, non-priority traffic (e.g. torrents) will speed up.

You speak to the company you purchased the service from ;) You are not mweb's responsibility.

But WoW Does work, so thank you, I hope the newsserver will speed up over time

The next obvious question about shaping, is whether all packages are equal in a pool? Or does the 4096K package get 12 times (or less) the priority of the 384K package, or 8 times (or twice) the priority of the 512K package?

Secondly if the 512K package only gets 1.3 times better traffic than the 384K package, it seems very poor value for money IMHO. (I assume part of this is due to the underlying 'mis-pricing' of the 512K ADSL line rental in the All-inclusve packages). The best value options seem to be either 384K or 4096K, not 512K.

A bit earlier in this thread, I asked a very specific question about shaping and the relative value for money of the respective packages:

I can understand that MWeb may not want to disclose their specific shaping process, but given the large price disparities between the 384K and 512K packages, I think I would want some more information before deciding which to switch to.

This is particularly relevant in view of the 'glitches' earlier this week, that seemed to slow down many people, but not everyone.
 
Can someone tell me if this 4Mb Package is worth it or not ?

What speed can i expect to access websites in the workday and work week ? 384k line ? 192k line ? 512 k line ? or my full 450kb/s 4Mb line ?

Jansen however points out that the service will be completely unshaped during off-peak hours, and that the offering will be totally uncapped. Peer-to-peer traffic and large downloads are therefore allowed on the network, but this may be shaped during peak hours if it starts to affect web browsing and other standard protocols.

Jansen made it clear that shaping/port prioritization will be kept to a minimum and will only be applied during periods of particularly high traffic.

I'd really like to know exactly when those times are since it's 22:30 PM and I really doubt that it qualifies as "periods of particularly high traffic" or "peak hours".

+1 , Every night it seems to be different! Still not full speed and its after 10:30 ....

Shows you how top-notch their bandwidth management systems is... it detects when there are load and adjusts accordingly, hence no definite time.
I seriously hope it is not some poor sod watching screens of bandwidth graphs all day and then clicks a button when he notices high load :D
 
Fargin sneaky bastages. They are capping me on 150KB/s on nntp and torrents combined. My nntp download is capped at 150K, but when I start a torrent download, the nntp drops to 2KB/s. So much for having a 4 meg option. MWEB, please state the speed you are throttling us to, and lower the price accordingly.
