MWEB Uncapped ADSL - Official Q & A

Hi All,

I've received feedback from engineering.

We experienced an unexpected peak in demand for priority capacity this afternoon (related to the migration of our current base) which necessitated a temporary reduction in the size of non-priority bandwidth pool to prevent degradation of the service as a whole. We are expecting to have additional capacity online very soon (should have already been in but we are at the mercy of the provider) which should elminate the need to take such steps in the future.

Again apologies and appreciation for your patience.

MWB.

My assumption is that this is still an issue that has not been resolved. I would however love some feedback from MWB.

Hi bobbles,

Its only 7:30 odd, as demand for priority traffic subsides into the evening, non-priority traffic (e.g. torrents) will speed up.

MWB.

what time at night will we get full speed? last night it was only after 12! surly from about 8 or so network load must drop?

Torrents are super slow...newshost is at 0KB/s

Switched back to finish the remaining 3GB of my Afrihost account until MWeb sort out their problems

The content is definately cached, even the supernatural episode you mentioned does not go above 2KB/s. And it is not a constant download speed, it would download one small piece, then lose connection completely, so the graph in grabit looks something like this /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\,

mine looks like this ____________________________________________________________________________.______________________________________

What the hell is going on, does Mweb host their own news server? or do they piggyback off saix?

If thats the case then how will we keep track of cached items on the mweb server?

Just tried to sign up with MWEB. Called the Sales hotline 08600 32000 a couple of times - was put on hold twice for more than 5 minutes when it actually connected. Been waiting a few hours for the "Call Me Back"... Disappointing that you can't sign up online like with other providers. Have given up and re-activated/upgraded with Afrihost. Epic fail MWEB...

Whenever I have phoned them they have answered within 30 seconds.

I am sitting as we speak on the phone for 45 mins

I want to know, why the taps were only opened after 12 last night, surely after 8 must be the norm. Or at least give usable download speeds till taps are opened. Talking 80-100kbs.

+1

I would appreciate feedback too, I have 7 Days to decide if I'm staying with Mweb....so far NOT so good...I have to continually switch over to my Telkom account to see movement....If this is a technical glitch fine, just inform us, but this is an indication of the overall performance - Well then I may as well stay with Telkom.

Clarification Required

Firstly, congratulations again on your marketing campaign to get people thinking and of course your great prices, like we've never seen before in SA.

Other ISP's apart from MWEB have really been knocked to the ground. So far OpenWeb, VOX, Afrihost, @lantic have made pricing adjustments and it would appear that other IS resellers are following soon. What a great way to let the free market decide the prices they want to pay!

Some Questions:

1 - I'd like the issue of the AUP from MWeb sorted out promptly. Afrihost has been very upfront with how they are going to deal with massive leechers. Quite simpily, it is impossible for MWeb to not have some mechanism to curtail the overuse/abuse of the service. The world over has witnessed similar AUP's; so why not be frank and forthcoming with it. You've already stated the the TOS are outdated and relate for the most part to the capped service, so any contractual obligations that arise from that may be voidable if you choose to cut people off if they abuse the service continuously. Some transparency would be great.

2 - Also, the signup process seems rather clumsy to me. I am aware that RICA makes some demands to you, that the customer must abide by. Now though, why are people still having to call the call centre to have their accounts set up or upgraded. In the first instance, why can't people signup online and forward the supporting documents within a reasonable time (where failing to do so results in account suspension)? Secondly, if you already have a service, why can't you just upgrade or down grade online as you should have already sent your supporting documents?

3 - Regarding the shaped service, what are accepted "minimums" for the shaped protocols? It would seem that rapidshare (specifically) and Torrents and P2P et al are sometimes receiving 0Kb/s. Is this not denial, rather than shaped? Whats speeds can one expect as a minimum when the shaping 'machine' is in active?

I look forward to your responses
