MWEB Uncapped ADSL - Official Q & A

Yes but that was well known before, i don't see the problem though. For me during the day i want email browsing etc to run fast which it is, i am happy to leave my pc on over night to finish my goodies :D.

If the only problem is the shaping of pirated goods during the day well then you best change account or get used to the reality.
Agreed. I'm not unhappy at all. Only thing is when does off peak begin and end cause at the moment it's anyone's guess...

I've also subscribed to Afrihosts uncapped account for comparison sakes and also so that I don't infringe the fair usage policies of either company...

As for pirating etc etc BAH....

I am not sure but i left grabit open from 6 last night and finished around 7gb, i would imagine around 7-8
Last night was 12am... you can do 1.5gb per hour on a 4mb line all things being equal so 7gb in around 4-4.5hours...

anyone that complains about only doing 7GB a night is spoiled beyond belief

Shaping/bandwidth update

Hi All,

Firstly apologies for the lack of response today, have only been able to pop in every now & then.

MWEB are well aware of the current capacity constraints on non-priority bandwidth (torrents, news, rapidshare etc.) and are pushing hard to alleviate the situation. The severe levels of shaping being experienced on non-priority traffic is not the norm, however this does not mean line speed all the time is either.

The non-priority bandwidth crunch is a result of a mismatch between additional capacity being bought online and the migration of the existing user base together with the unprecedented demand for new signups. Migrations/sales have got a bit ahead of new capacity deployment necessitating that we squeeze the non-priority traffic to maintain reasonable performance for the service as a whole.

We expect to have the situation rectified in the next few days, however we are reliant on Telkom commissioning the (already delayed) additional capacity. In the mean time MWEB has temporarily paused the migration of existing users until this initial capacity expansion is complete (to be followed by additional capacity expansions). Our engineers are also investigating way of fine tuning our bandwidth management policies to improve performance of non-priority traffic.

We ask for a little more patience, MWEB is still commited to delivering the most compelling price-to-performance uncapped offering to the market.

MWB.

Glad to hear now we just need a proper online form signup.

Fantastic response mate, we'll keep you updated as to how we're all doing on these protocols on the Feedback thread.

Severe indeed. My torrent on a 512 line is just ticking over @ 0.1kB/s. There are only a few days left this month so let's hope this will take only a few days. I'm afraid, I'm going elsewhere if no improvement by month end. (I'm sure I'm not the only one)

Some Questions:

1 - I'd like the issue of the AUP from MWeb sorted out promptly. Afrihost has been very upfront with how they are going to deal with massive leechers. Quite simpily, it is impossible for MWeb to not have some mechanism to curtail the overuse/abuse of the service. The world over has witnessed similar AUP's; so why not be frank and forthcoming with it. You've already stated the the TOS are outdated and relate for the most part to the capped service, so any contractual obligations that arise from that may be voidable if you choose to cut people off if they abuse the service continuously. Some transparency would be great.

2 - Also, the signup process seems rather clumsy to me. I am aware that RICA makes some demands to you, that the customer must abide by. Now though, why are people still having to call the call centre to have their accounts set up or upgraded. In the first instance, why can't people signup online and forward the supporting documents within a reasonable time (where failing to do so results in account suspension)? Secondly, if you already have a service, why can't you just upgrade or down grade online as you should have already sent your supporting documents?

3 - Regarding the shaped service, what are accepted "minimums" for the shaped protocols? It would seem that rapidshare (specifically) and Torrents and P2P et al are sometimes receiving 0Kb/s. Is this not denial, rather than shaped? Whats speeds can one expect as a minimum when the shaping 'machine' is in active?

I look forward to your responses
Hi hambone,

1. The AUP is being looked into to make it more readable & understandable. I re-itterate however there is no 100GB or other limit.

2. I shall escalate your comments to the relevant deptartment to see if/how we can streamline the signup process within the bounds of RICA.

3. Please see above response on shaping/bandwidth.

MWB.

We don't expect full line speed, 75% though would be a nice number to shoot for :)

Guys, please join the Facebook group "Free The Web South Africa" or http://www.facebook.com/FreeTheWebSA and post your issues there as well.
That group has close on 20,000 people in it, let them see the issues you having, let your voice be heard.

Right now, it's like 50 or so people are seeing the posts and complaining, I suggest you let MORE people see the issues!

Join me!

I would seriously be happy with 1mbps( 105+- kB/s) which is 25% of your max throughput during the day and full speed from 7pm , which I think is reasonable.

So you saying a Giant company like Mweb has all these problems while afrihost is gliding threw without a hitch

Jip, MWEB did too much too soon, would have been wiser to first migrate and give current users the new deals before going open season on themselves. Greed's a bitch.
