BITTORRENT TEST

The way we tested this was to download a 20mb file on the machine, reimage the machine and then redownload the file. We chose a file that had 4437 seeds and 307 leechs. This way we were not depending on someone else’s slow connection.

Here are the results.

GamCo – 331 Kbytes/s Office Hours – 353 Kbytes/s After Hours = Average 342 Kbytes/s
OpenWeb – 272 Kbytes/s Office Hours – 250 Kbytes/s After Hours = Average 261 Kbytes/s
Afrihost – 303 Kbytes/s Office Hours – 194 Kbytes/s After Hours = Average 249 Kbytes/s
Mweb – 19 Kbytes/s Office Hours – 93 Kbytes/s After Hours = Average 56 Kbytes/s

Do I even need to comment?

Thing is, we all know that with a SHAPED account, during business hours, with torrents, you will get that speed. After hours is when you use torrents or better yet, use news servers
Also, for Gamco/Openweb/AH to get that speed during business hours on a shaped account for the same price? I call bullshyte ...... it's either capped packages or business packages they used.

All the accounts tested were Shaped Uncapped accounts.

" On the product, we used our 4mb uncapped shaped account. All the other companies supplied us with the same type of account for around about the same price, so I think that the test accounts were comparable. " <-- Quoted in his reply lower in the article in the comments section

MWEB just failed.

How will Sabrewolfy deal with this, oh the shame.

all IS basic uncapped account( those was used in test R500 ones), is unshaped even they state shaped in .

but as soon you get in that throttle group i-net is kind of useless.( i know i have this at work)

i have 512k shaped IS based at work but i can dl torrents at 800Kbs+(10mb line) during office hours, but when throttled i can barely load website.

my Point is that account was not tested up the throttle period making test not valid, need ot be tested full month on heavy downloading.

Those are your words. The author uses the broad term "same type of account". If it can unequivocaly be shown that the other accounts were all shaped then MWeb is definitely getting it's butt kicked AT THAT STAGE. But like others have stated, perhaps the test needs to be conducted over a longer period. Say three weeks into a month, after 300GB have been downloaded and then see how each account is performing in comparison.
It really comes down to horses for courses though, which is of more value to you and your needs (ito ISPs), throughput vs output etc.

I would have been less sceptical, had they simply gone and signed up for "similar" accounts off the ISPs websites. Were the ISPs told in the approach that the accounts would be used in a "public" test, and how could we be sure that the test accounts were those which the ISPs were meant to provide?
Not saying the article must therefore be discounted, but there are some questions that can be asked.

It looks like they don't know much about the backbone providers and their shaping policies, those IS accounts (I think all of them are except Mweb?) are unshaped until you hit the top 40% and get heavily shaped. Also they used OpenWeb Gold which isn't a direct comparison.

Does show MWeb's tough shaping on torrents though, but the rest of the performance is basically identical. Would've been interesting for them to go a little further than testing one torrent and maybe also test the news servers for each network and filehosting sites as well as normal downloads not off download.com, which might even be an akamai server.

They say they emailed asking for a test account for this purpose, so the companies knew about it and could've easily assigned them unshaped accounts, except for MWeb.

A real independent test should've bought these few accounts for one month and realised that you only need to test 1 IS account or maybe 2 for comparison.

Still I would definitely go with an IS account if I had low enough usage most months.

I for one will DEFINITELY be investigating Gamco, with speeds like that, during the day and night, they outclass MWEB on all levels.

Maybe MyBB must do the test, nothing against your post but we need some credibility and trust in the results.

Please note that we will be doing maintenance on our JHB IPC network between 03h00 and 04h00 tomorrow morning. P2P will be cut back and JHB traffic will be routed via Cape Town for this period.

Kind regards

Is this still going? I'm having stange isues on my connection, router is stable and not disconnecting but my traffic acts almost as if it drops. browsing , p2p , gaming, steam anything. It goes along and then suddenly stops and the after a few seconds carries on again. Durban based so I assume my traffic is normally routed via jhb.

Hi Kosmik

Experienced this twice this morning already and I can't do any gaming because pings are sitting on 70-90 instead of the usual 28-38. Switching to an AH account and the pings are fine.

I've tried both with and without, it appears to be totally random and it's any website as well, I'll run a constant ping to mybb and post when it happens.

Hi Mephisto_Helix

What do you experience with only your browsing running? Do you connection drop while gaming?

Kind regards

Just browsing - came to a standstill, no traffic, twice for about 5mins each time and then just resumed. This also happened yesterday for roughly 25 minutes, the same time as everyone else noticed it.

Gaming - I don't even bother because the ping is useless to play with. A few weeks ago it would 999 and disconnect/drop but now it's just high ping that happens exactly like the traffic interruption.
