Good Morning Prof.Merlin

Are you only encountering problems when downloading torrents? Which sites are you downloading from?

Kind regards,
MWEB Ops

Hi there

The torrent files download okay from the sites. torrentz.com and thepiratebay.org. Tried 2 pc's, one with vuze and the other with utorrent.

Only have problems with that

damn :/

i did 8gb file last night no probs, did you change settings to accept tad more connections, as you never connect to all peers, sometimes you get pretty crappy ones

The Cape Town link is different.

Mweb is not great for torrents.

Hi Prof.Merlin

Bittorrent performance can be a very subjective experience as the protocol does not, as I understand it, cater for any performance based peer negotiations. In other words the connections established to active peers and seeds are essentially randomly chosen. It's also important to note that there is a very big difference between the number of potential seeds and peers reported by the tracker, vs those actually active at the time. I know that may seem obvious to point out, but I have come across a number of people querying the bittorrent experience who quite simply didn't understand it.

We do monitor the overall P2P experience on our network and run regular real world tests and we do our best to maintain a healthy balance between allowing torrenters to do their thing, without impacting on overall network performance. In terms of the speeds you are reporting I can assure you that they are far below the current averages and results obtained from my own recent tests, which would indicate that you either have an underlying problem, or there is an issue with the files you are trying to download.

As a general rule though we don't specifically troubleshoot issues pertaining to P2P speeds and would only get involved if you felt that the P2P speeds you are getting are symptomatic of an underlying problem with your overall connectivity. Please let us know if there are any other symptoms you are experiencing besides the low torrent speeds.

Kind Regards
Will

Hi Will

Thank you for the reply. I understand that this is a uncapped account and torrents to get lower priority than other protocols, but i just enabled my afrihost account and i had the torrent jump up from 12KB/s to over 130KB/s. The other torrents running also went up a lot.

I then disabled my afrihost account and reconnected with mweb uncapped and speeds dropped to 10KB/s again.

I have seen poor performance with P2P in the past on Mweb, however since the start of 2011 it has been full speed after hours provided you have enough peers and seeders. I just thought I would mention that here because I am really happy with my Mweb connection.

Rouxenator happy? Can someone check the temperature in hell please? Must a a cold day! ;-)))

I am also very happy with the service. It is not as good as when I joined, but the quality have been consistent the last three months. Which in the long term is what users expect and demand.

I've cancelled my MWEB uncapped 4mbit subscription unfortunately. I found that during the day I was getting between 10-15kb/s downloads on torrents and this was having a huge effect on my general browsing. In the evenings/weekends the torrents would speed up to around 100-115kb/s if there were lots of seeds.

On my Web Africa R99 for 11GB (MYADSL special) + R95 for 11GB after hours I get up to 900kb/s at any time of the day or night on torrents and browsing is unaffected.

So I'm going to have to live with 22GB a month for around R200 instead of uncapped for R500 or so, but I am just tired of unresponsive browsing when any torrents are running, and the constant switching between the two accounts for the day and the night.

22gb aint allot for month when you use to uncapped.

if limit my torrent to 3 upload slot and 30kbs, then browsing is slower but still faster then full sped 512k line :p

just use newsgroups? :/

I am having problems with Mweb news server downloads, can't get above 8-9 kbps. A while ago someone sent me an ip address that worked like a charm, unfortunately news.mweb.co.za and its respective ip are not giving me much joy. Anyone got an address that might help me out? Just PM if you'd like to keep it discrete. Thanks.

I'm quite surprised how you schedule last minute maintenance and then reschedule at the last minute as well. Are you guys not doing much forward planning at all?

Hi burn,

Please advise if you are still experiencing this on the news server, if so, please PM me your MWeb details in order for me to look into this.
