Why is the cape town news server so much slower than the Jhb one.

I use to connect to the Joburg server and I got full speed on cached items.. now.. I connect to cape town and I get like 25k a second on my 4 MEg line?

It seems us cape town users dont get access to the cache server

we have to restrict the amount of bandwidth available to p2p activities.
This includes, torrents, nntp and one-click hosting services such as Rapidshare

I just wish you wouldn't refer to it all as P2P, rather call it bandwidth intensive activities.

NNTP isn't even closely relayed to P2P by any stretch of the imagination.

It actually has very little to do with international capacity :) All traffic has to go through the IPC connections and in order to ensure that there is quality of service on high priority activities we have to restrict the amount of bandwidth available to p2p activities.
This includes, torrents, nntp and one-click hosting services such as Rapidshare. We don't differentiate between the different types of p2p activity and as p2p users contend amongst themselves for this bandwidth speeds will fluctuate based on the current demand.
A high priority activity is what? Browsing?

The problem is there is not enough bandwidth to play with, so browsing becomes the only thing that works. Curtailing P2P and other "bandwidth intensive activities" is inevitable in such a small space. Then when people complain, the rule is to say they did it themselves and browsing must be protected.

I would tend to disagree with you on that score Greg :)

The purpose being served and the content types are largely the same in all of the areas mentioned, they're just different delivery mechanisms.

If you choose to call it something different that's really up to you, however for purposes of shaping these are the services that we place in this category which is something that has been discussed here at length on several occasions.

Hi fbman

It is possible for there to be a difference in the experience between the two servers. Bear in mind that we have independent IPC nodes in JHB and CPT so in terms of the demand on available p2p bandwidth it's quite likely that you will see some variances between the two network segments.

Having said that however there shouldn't be such a big difference between the two and it's my understanding that there is cache replication in place between the two news environments. I'll ask the server team to do a full investigation into this and see if they can come up with any issues that need to be addressed.

Cut and paste troll goes CTRL-V.

Don't you get tired of following me everywhere with the same pick-up line? :D

Thank you for finally getting down to it, that is the one single reason we ever try to goto jhb directly, has been the only reason for it since the beginning. Most of us anyway, I acknoledge that some use "certain known methods" with different news server IP's to get a speed increase.

Understand where you're coming from - I will take this on and let you know once I have some feedback.

Newsgroups going nowhere here in Cape Town and torrent performance isn't much better...when is this going to be resolved?

MWeb must have changed something on the shaping rules. Since sunday afternoon the news server only run at close to normal speed in the early hours of the morning and stops at 7:00 in the morning.
