@Kitty09: Our understanding is that using SSL/encrypted tunnels for (mass) downloading is considered misuse of the network, as this allows the download to come down at line speed, thereby bypassing the shapers.

i found that mweb is fine for a ong term downloader, ie i know i want this and i am willing to wait. but for the person who has a 4mbps line because they want to get the stuff as soon as possible, I found mweb not ideal. their shaping policy is extremely draconian. The fact that I could not enjoy my 4mbps line for what it is eventually made me jump ship.
+1, that's exactly the reason I've just given notice too. I would rather heavy shaping kicks in at 150gigs or even 120gigs, hell make it 80gigs but at least allow the line speed to be at maximum until that stage is reached...

Im happy with the 30 gigs i get on a 384k line, thanks Mweb dont change anything

512 kbps 5GB Cap >> 384 kbps UnCapped Shaped
R549 > R349

Lets be honest guys, as far a home user uncapped is concerned, MWEB is the only option right now. We would all love to have 4Mb uncapped unshaped for R539 but it simply isn't possible yet.

How much do you download in a month?--I am getting the 4Mbps line soon and on my 384K (MWEB uncapped) I did about 30GB per month (I did not do a lot of torrentz or download HD movies; but I am planning to with my 4Mbps line--expecting to be about 60-100GB for me per month on this line.
So which one would you recommend?
OW-uncapped unshaped lite is R495
MWEB- uncapped, shaped is R539

Easily attainable. Thing is I get my episodes off the major file hosting sites and during the day and late into the evening I'm not seeing anything beyond 100kBps. Even now RS is returning 70kBps. Look, bang for buck the product cannot be faulted but if I can pay an extra R199 per month and get 200kBps or 250kBps then so be it.. The price I pay for being impatient I guess..

I've averaged 150gigs over the last 4-5 months. But the last bastion of 400+kBps IE Megaupload has just been added to the heavily shaped category...

Correct Sabrewolfy

However the encrypted bittorrent traffic from enabling encryption in utorrent, or whatever your torrent app of choice is, is recognised and managed correctly to the best of my knowledge - I certainly haven't noticed any significant difference in testing this. Perhaps the OP was just lucky :)

There seems to be a problem with STEAM right now, it takes ages to log in and the STEAM update is doing squat. I switched to our WA account and login took but a few seconds and STEAM is updating now. Please have a look at what's causing the problem Mr. MWEB. :(

MWEB.

Cannot comment on OW yet as I am yet to use their product.

MWEB is still a very good product. Schedule your torrents/downloads for after hours and you will be impressed I'm sure, especially coming from a 384kbps line. There is seriously no comparison. Regardless of the shaping you will be blown away by the better performance of the 4mb line..

This is a problem I've been experiencing on and off for going on 2 months now (really ever since the big chunk of Seacom downtime around June). Steam seems to be shaped down way too heavily (if only the login portion).

Steam had some large updates today. One took around 40mins to download (384k). No problems with it on IS (AXXESS).

Connection was very sluggish last night and I kept on getting lag spikes (i.e. about 10-15 seconds of NOTHING and then resumed comms), disconnects and time-outs in World of Warcraft. :(

I had the same issue, he suggested I change my adsl login from @dslmweb.co.za to @mweb.co.za

Fixed the problem.

Since the product was launched, I was doing between 200GB and 300GB. And probably could have pushed a lot more than that.

The thing that frustrated me was that basically between 7/8am and 12/1am; downloads from news servers were at around 100kB/s or lower during the day; and improved a bit in the evenings to maybe the 200kB/s region. It was only after 1am really that line speeds would be close to full speed.

Outside of that, http downloads were almost always at around full line speed. So streaming and the like was generally quite good. As I said earlier, as long as you are not impatient (and I imagine coming from 384k the speeds mentioned above will be acceptable)

I am currently using an OW Gold account (on the Vodacom backbone) so can't comment on the OW accounts that are on the IS backbone.
