MWEB Uncapped Subscribers Feedback

FWIW, I download podcasts fairly regularly on my 384kbps line and very seldom have problems. On the odd occasion that a file does not fully download, restarting/resuming it works fine. As much as I like Firefox, in my experience it's downloader is quite fragile. I use wget or iTunes to download podcasts.

I can't say I've ever experienced this "caching" problem. I did have a frustrating problem several months ago (discussed on these forums) where certain files (often mp3 podcasts) would simply stop downloading or stall. MWeb and I eventually tracked that down to a fault on the local DSLAM, which Telkom fixed.

Prophet, what download manager did you use for filesonic downloads ? FDM does not work, it just downloads a 14kb php redirect page.

Edit: Got it : http://www.internetdownloadmanager.com/

look, i've tried a few and getright is just the best imho. IDM is cool, but it can't properly handle large files. in comparison getright never had any corruption vs other idms i've tried including idm itself. even at 9 gig it got "cooked", though more so with anything from 30 - 70 gig range. i will when i get off from work go to FileSonic and retest getright with it and see what happens for something around the 1 gig mark that is not multi part archive.

I am trying IDM now and it is really not impressive for me. FDM looks a lot better and works better to. IDM stuffed up a FileSonic download so now I am waiting 15 minutes before I can try again, this time by using the context menu and then selection Download with IDM. Lets see if that works. Got a Oron download going in IDM (one that was previously bad cached) so I will see if the claims that IDM fixed bad cached files are true. If it fails I will try Getright (used that in 2003 if I recall correctly)

Edit : Update 10:02 am, the oron download failed on the exact same spot in IDM that it did in Opera. Therefor I can conclude that IDM -DOES NOT FIX- broken cached files. I will try getright now and give feedback.

Edit : Update 10:24 am, the filesonic download failed on the exact same spot in IDM that it did in Opera. Therefor I can conclude (yet again) that IDM -DOES NOT FIX- broken cached files. I will try getright now and give feedback.

Edit : Update 10:54 am, got the exact same problems with GetRight that I did with IDM (and FDM).

Conclusion - no matter if you use a download manager or not, if you have a broken cached file from a server that does not support resume then you are stuffed, well and good, forever.

mweb, whats up with the severe http shaping lately? some filehosts are now totally unusable, fileserve runs at 20kbs AT ALL TIMES OF THE DAY OR NIGHT whereas before speed would normally pick up late at night and during the day, same goes for netload.

Yeah last night I was getting 50kB/s constant from hotfile, and this with a premium account. Use to get like 100kB/s and more

even with a free download you will be able to max your 4 line if the download was unshaped, hotfile used to run 100+ for me aswell before late at night, fileserve is just dead now, 20kbs at 1 in the morning, 7kbs right now, absolutely pathetic.

Free Download Manager works better with Flashgot for Firefox. It resolves a lot of naming issues, so you do not end up with 14k php files.

If you do not have an account with a file storage service though, you probably are better off starting the download through the website concerned.

I find FDM is fine with rapidshare and hotfile, but IDM works better for me with Fileserve. Oron I need to go to their site to start the download.

Oron generates a link for you that is valid on your IP for 8 hours - so you can download it with any download application of choice. IDM works great on FileSonic but none of the download apps can get round the broken cached files.

Hello MWEB,
Whats with the aggressive shaping on p2p since the beginning of the year? I can hardly get 30kb/s during the day and 100 kb/s at night. If I use my IS account I easily hit 400 kb/s at anytime of the day or night. According to your help-desk the speeds I am getting are acceptable speeds for an uncapped account. I am not looking for zero shaping on my account, just stop being so aggressive, as it defeats the purpose of an uncapped account.
Please look into the issue and come back with a solution.

Thanks
Craig

Firewall requirement, and don't want to go for a business package as I can not cover the cost every month.

The file also stops downloading @ 750 KB, also in Stellenbosch

I have told Will@Mweb about it because he cried about the illegal and immoral content of other broken files that I provided him with.

Lets see if he really does want to help and if this file can get them to fix the cache server once and for all.

@Rouxenator you only need the first 2 minutes of those pr0ns anyway!

True - but with podcasts you need the entire file so I hope the can fix the caching server now.

Sadly I cannot even see the first two seconds since this is multi part password protected archives I am trying to download and one part cannot download.
