MWEB Uncapped Subscribers Feedback

Well I have been raising it for quite some time now, and would appreciate an answer better than the one you have provided (no answer really) or kindly, as stated in my first post, direct me to your cancellations department.

Are you saying 5kB/s and below is acceptable on NNTP? Are you saying that the shaping policy has changed that intensively? If p2p truly works as a pool system why are some 4mb uncapped shaped users experiencing lightning fast speeds on NNTP at any given time (200kB/s - 400kB/s)? Similarly, why are some 4mb uncapped shaped users experiencing solid average speeds (100kB/s - 200kB/s) at any given time? And finally, why are some 4mb uncapped shaped users experiencing the kind of crap I am (0kB/s - 5kB/s) at any given time? Why are some users being shaped so badly in comparison to others? As far as I understand we are all on the same product, paying the same price every month, and in the same bandwidth pool.. why the vastly differing results? This question has been completely avoided everytime I've asked it, and I would appreciate a transparent answer. If you cannot answer, that's ok with me, but please be honest about it so I can cancel and sign up with a value-for-money service. With all due respect, the lack of transparency on MWEB's part is the most frustrating thing of all.

well said.

Over the past 3 days I"ve been getting 0Kbps on local and international news servers during the day. Clearly something is broken!

Today I was at least getting 20 - 30Kbps during the day which is acceptable as I understand your shaping profiles. (ie someone fixed it)

An hour ago it died and is still at 0Kbps. Its broken. This can't be due to shaping - I mean there's NO traffic coming down my line. If I had to get out my 1200 baud modem and dial into Telkom I would get faster speeds than I'm currently getting. :(

Mweb guys why must my pings be so high sometimes? I'm a gamer and I got my 4mb especially so I don't lag and now you guys are causing us to have high pings even to local servers? Even your own website was pinging at 350ms. What is the reason for this?

Hi dasco144,

Please PM me your Mweb account details in order for me to look into it from my side.

Regards,
MWEB Guy

Greg this is the issue as I see it right now:

We currently have various types of p2p traffic all sharing the same priority level, which has been the case going right back to the launch of our IPC network. Within that priority level you will find that when contending for bandwidth that more aggressive protocols like bittorrent have always tended to fair better.

Despite this up until recently. I've had the impression that barring the odd complaint those customers with a preference for utilizing international NNTP feeds have managed to get a fair experience when it comes to p2p.

In the last few weeks there has obviously been quite a bit of adjustment to the QoS model based on the various discussions in this thread, but ultimately the more dynamic shaping model should actually be allowing for more p2p traffic to flow over the long haul (this is born out by overall network statistics).

Within the changes which have taken place though we have not as yet made any adjustments to what is classed as p2p, or created any separation in priority between the types of p2p traffic, other than to bump the priority of MWEB news, as mentioned earlier.
So I would logically expect that the performance of NNTP should have remained roughly at the same level it was previously, which is to say reasonably decent, barring the odd complaint. If this is not the case then it is going to require some further investigation and I will definitely ensure that this happens and that we look into appropriate solutions.

My understanding of where we are now in terms of the QoS model that's been implemented and the traffic management capabilities is that we are now in a position to consider taking a more granular approach to the prioritization of p2p. My personal view is that we should give this careful consideration and try and ensure that there is a more balanced experience between the different types of p2p traffic, but as I've said these are changes that need to be thought through very carefully and should not be rushed into as any change to traffic prioritization runs the risk of creating a knock on effect that negatively impacts on other services and it is definitely not a simple matter to try and evenly slice up the available p2p capacity between protocols that behave very differently.

Odd complaint?

I'm having the same issue!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let's put all our hands up if we having the same NNTP issue - while at it - those poor suckers who don't know about MyBB probalby are too!!!

Getting the same here. Its all broken but they won't admit it and keep saying its shaping. I mean 0Kbps!!!! :wtf:

The MWEB tech guy who called me said I "MUST" use the MWEB news server - when I explained the problem he told me (as if I'm a idiot!!) that it's THEIR routing that is causing the issue... I can't deal with bullshyte like that... I mean really!
Does he think he is talking to some old oupa?

Well its not. This def not the case. I've been with Mweb since the launch of the uncapped product and NNTP has always performed fine during the day. For the last 3 days I've been getting 0Kbps during the day.

There is currently NO response for NNTP - its dead in the water. There is no traffic flowing.

Please please please put someone onto this and get it resolved to what it was before - thats all I'm asking.

Not in my (and others) cases - its currently not working at all.

It's all I'm asking too gregmcc - minus a call from a techy who is going to try BS me into using a MWEB news server when I clearly don't want too! (I pay for my ND account!)

I am running some Linux updates from a local mirror on another machine now, and in fairness to MWEB, I have to report that they are coming down constantly at line speed, and in fact are bursting above the line speed sometimes. This certainly was not my experience a few days ago when downloading from the same mirror.

Ok, so HTTP downloads are 'okay' but NNTP downloads are NOT - clearly they are doing something and not willing to admit it.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see something is going on and the more and more they deny it the more clients lose respect for them - THANK GOD when you GOOGLE the problems, these threads come up - people find this stuff and the smart ones do not go with MWEB!

+1.

I"ve got no complaints with HTTP downloads and I"ve got no qualms with NNTP being shaped during the day. What I DO have a problem with is its currently dead!

I'll just have to switch all my downloads to HTTP during the day and then NNTP At 2am :(

I posted this on the "FREE THE WEB" MWEB page:

Hi all, special request - if you are a NNTP user (you download from NEWS SERVERS) and have noticed that your connection is basically FUBAR, please post here: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/221840-MWEB-Uncapped-Subscribers-Feedback MWEB claims that only the "odd complaint" has been noticed but all of us on MyBB who are MWEB users basically notice the line is dead, we talking 1KB/s, connection time outs etc. Please post in the above mentioned URL to inform MWEB - if you don't use NNTP or NewsServers then you can ignore this post. Thanks! Sadly, there is 315 (and growing) pages of issues with MWEB but right now, we are trying to PROVE to MWEB that there is clear issues with NNTP / News Servers! (MWEB's server is dead, NewsDemon is dead, etc etc etc) because they keep denying it saying "only the ODD complaint" which is not true in reality! Thanks!

Last time I did that, MWEB deleted the comment and then sent me a message saying I must contact [email protected] for help!

I can't post on the "MWEB" page - says I have no rights - lol! probably been blocked or something. :(

Mweb Guy - I've sent you a pm.

I don't believe Mweb is the problem with the issues I've been experiencing in Sunninghill.

All 3 of my accounts: Mweb, Afrihost and WebAfrica exhibit the same issue in the last 48 hours: zero KB international newserver downloads.

Friend 900m down the road in the same area has the same issue. Must be exchange related.

Must currently be the fastest growing page on the forum :haha:
