MWEB Uncapped Subscribers Feedback

Please switch me to one of those "disabled torrents, working usenet" accounts please ~_~

I have no idea about NNTP i just got news servers sorted out yesterday and am still new to it. Just using SABnzbd and NZB Matrix. And the mweb news.mweb.co.za

0.0kb/s on NNTP for me as well while others are having great speeds. 0.0kb/s is not shaping, its actually more like capping the port/service. I have been told that if im not happy with this kinda of shaping i am experiencing i should look into other options. 0.0 kb/s has to be unacceptable for anyone. Mweb reps are online on these forums btw guys, they just do not seem to reply when the complaints hit, as if they seem to know when its going to happen.

Will did say he was looking into nntp going 0 for a few hours every day, mayby someone is tinkering on that side?

Mweb Guy and Will@mweb,

I think its time Mweb comes clean to what's going on with the p2p, NNTP traffic and gaming.

Lately there has been more negative feedback regarding the product then good. Too many people complain about the same problems.

I have tried with 3 different uncapped accounts, and each of them are doing exactly the same as the other.

NNTP is dead, getting max 2kb/s on international usenet servers, as well as to the local Mweb server. I have test on all the normal ports 119, even on SSL port 8080 or 443. Nothing...

Yes, I understand p2p and NNTP has the lowest priority on the list, but I could recall a time, where in the day on normal port 119, a person would get around 20-30kb on a 4mb line, and in the evens around 9pm full speed till the morning 6am. And on most weekends full speed too.

What has change? Why not tell us, this way you would avoid people trying to bypass the shaping protocols all the time.

Play open cards with your clients, doing this people will have a better understanding to whats going on.

Fair enough lordnokon, let's try and be completely transparent in both directions.

We have already openly discussed the changes implemented since the beginning of May starting with the introduction of the London traffic manager. subsequent to this we shifted the local links to a more dynamic QoS model which allows the p2p traffic to burst into available space more dynamically, but in the reverse when other traffic picks up volume it is going to force the p2p to back off more effciently and this is something as a p2p using community you guys are going to have to come to terms with, because it is not changing. Over the long haul this does in fact allow for more p2p traffic to flow through the network and this is born out by overall usage statistics so depending on network load it is possible that you will see these p2p deadspots at certain times of the day, but at other times of the day you will see more throughput than you have previously and you will find that the overnight speeds taper off more gradually in the morning.

Now in the interests of reciprocating this transparency I would like to request that everyone who is not happy with their p2p experience post their total bandwidth usage for both last month and this month so far so that we can exactly how adversely you are being affected by the new configuration. Any takers?

To Will's question

Personally, just me, I am happy for the most part usage wise. I do about 150-200gb's a month. If it goes at 150 or 400, I don't mind, as long as it goes. The only problems I have is when my gaming is adversely affected, my streaming is adversely affected and/or the newsserver, as now, is sitting on zero.

Thanks Mephisto

And to address your concerns the guys are working very hard on fine tuning the QoS both the local and international links to get the experience on gaming and streamed video to exactly where we'd like it to be. We know there is still work to be done in this area and please be assured we will not slack off until we are 100% happy with this aspect of the network performance.

Ditto! Don't touch me on my gaming! :) Lag is a B@stard.

There's the problem Will, what about the client experience?

Ha fa fa la la; Will got cross with us. See, I appreciate that the shaping is more dynamic; its given me longer hours in the morning to run at higher speeds... but now NNTP is still an issue because a couple of us are sitting with 0 KB/s; while others on torrents et al are going like the clappers (and more still are 0 KB/s on Torrent and rambo on NNTP).

Its [The shaping Policy] not quite right, but I appreciate the efforts MWEB is making here. That's why I contend that the criticism is constructive, and it would be for more constructive if people here didn't post "NNTP" stinks at the moment.

So basically your telling us as customers get with the program or go fudge our self's, isnt that right Will? And Will I have used 86GBs so far (Mweb Guy can vouch for me there seeing he went into my account last night, new Mweb member). Mweb Guy was polite enough to try and help me out last night but nothing seemed to work. Now concerning this P2P scenario, I have the average 3.42Mbps downloading and 0.40Kbps uploading according to speed test result, but my downloads and gaming showed closer to 10-50KB/s. Care to comment?
