MWEB up for grabs

Multinational media company Naspers (NPN) announced on Monday that, following approaches for the sale of its internet service provider (ISP) business MWEB, it is initiating an auction process.

This is a very surprising move - I thought it was a very profitable unit for Naspers and a good way for it to make sure it is well positioned in the Internet space…

Every ISP I join ends up getting sold :(

When I came back to SA in 1995 I joined Digiserve BBS, that got sold.
Then I went to Icon owned by IS who sold it in 1998
Then I joined m-web who are now selling.
Next on the list is WebAfrica

There's a word out of the past --- Digiserve.

BBS'ing was fun back then...

Small companies offer great and personal service - big companies only see you as just a number (to be ignored sometimes)....

"This strategy, focusing on connectivity, diverges from Naspers's core focus of online content platforms, communities and commerce. Naspers owns no ISP elsewhere in the world.

This is sad, one would have thought that with Naspers' financial backing, MWEB could have been a solid 1st tier provider.

Whoever buys them would first have to recover money spent on the purchase before they think about infrastructure spend.

MWEB has been very profitable afaik, so this only means the bidders will be offering that much more...
Yikes! We talking Big $$$'s here

and the shares are on the way up

Shares in Naspers rose 3.38 percent to 183.50 rand by 1029 GMT, while the Johannesburg bourse's Top 40 index was up 0.12 percent.

Ok since you people don't seem to get the point of this auction... I'll now bid R1.01

Mweb has been having serious financial problems for many years. I'm surprised it has taken this long for this to happen.

I wouldn't want that company even if I could get it for a 1c bid.

I feel sorry for their staff - trying times.
