Horrid accident to be sure, but I cannot see myself riding in a manner where my speed is going to completely override my ability to react to an unexpected situation.

I act under the assumption that I am invisible, and that every car on the road is randomly unidirectional.

Do you guys also have your family/friends/work colleges constantly making you feel guilty about riding a bike? 10 times more so since I have become a dad.
I put a pic on my fb of my new bike. Took it down shortly after, after getting negative comments.

I have my dad saying in one breath that when he became a dad, he got rid of his bike and then in the next breath telling me how he used to ride so drunk that he couldn't even walk. And how he used to stand on his seat going past cops. How he used to race my uncle around town. I.e. he would be pretty dumb not to give up bikes if that is what he did. I am Mr safety guy on the bike. Never drink and ride. ATGATT. Training. Don't speed excessively etc etc

I've been obsessed with bikes since I was a tiny kid. I literally spent all my pocket money on bike mags. I was never allowed one “as long as you live under my roof“. It's not like I woke up one morning a couple of years ago and decided to get a bike. I've been obsessed my whole life.

Seems everyone is either telling me bikes are dangerous (like I didn't already know) or guilt tripping me because I am a dad and I am going to die.
These same people will happily smoke/drink every day of their lives.

Aaarg sorry for rant. Just annoyed.

People who really know me don't pull this ****...Possibly because many of them ride themselves.

But "acquentences" are quick to offer this "advice" and yes more so since we had a baby as well.

Little do they know she'll be riding before she's 5 if all goes to plan.

Best thing to shut them up is to fight fire with stupid fire. Asked them if they immediately stopped driving when they heard of someone dying in a car crash etc.

Statistically also remind them that every day riders don't crash near as often as weekend warriors.

You are stastically more likely to die in a car accident than a bike accident ... how many car accidents vs bike accidents this past month?

But I'm sure more likely to be disabled from a bike.

Are those SA specific stats? Any links?

Having had the misfortune of writing off both a scooter and a car, I can personally say I'd much rather do my next accident in a car...

It's all very circumstantial.

The major car accidents I've attended to the people in cars were always stuck inside for hours and the others were already dead.

I've attended a number of serious bike accidents and not once a dead one. Worst cases have been a guy losing his leg (amputated after, not in the accident) and a guy smashing his teeth out on impact.

Not to say statistically my experience is accurate. Just pointing out that car crashes can often be far worse.

However on the flip side a bumper bash in a car isn't much fun on a bike.

https://www.arrivealive.co.za/Accident-Types

"Non-wearing of seatbelts increase the risk of serious injury or death by between 40% and 50% in case of an accident.

More than 95% of all road accidents happen as a direct result of a traffic offence. Most accidents can be attributed to 2 or more simultaneous traffic offences. Generally human factors, such as non-adherence to traffic rules and legislation and aggressive, reckless, negligent and inconsiderate driving behaviour, failing to stop at traffic signals, unsafe and illegal overtaking, as well as inappropriate speed for circumstances and driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs are major contributory factors, totalling to about 70% to 80%. Vehicle fitness aspects such as smooth tyres, poor brakes, defective lights, steering and suspension of the vehicle contribute to between 10% and 15%, while road and environmental factors such as poor road conditions and signposting, poor fencing, allowing stray animals on the road, poor visibility, etc contribute to between 5% and 10%."

From that graph, there are 4x more car fatalities than bike.

Also ask your friends, do they ever speed? text on their phone? (these idiots cause a lot of bike accidents)

That graph is a bit useless without knowing the number of cyclists vs drivers.

shoosh with your logic now!

4 times less deaths, but I'm reasonably sure there is at max 1/10th the number of cyclists vs cars.

You still way more likely to have an accident on a bike, but I accept that and try and ride as safe as possible.
However, it's the nature of a bike that I tend to take a lot more chances on the bike than in the car.

Decided to take a ride out to cullinan myself. Weather is awesome for riding. Nice and cool.

After seeing this, I'm very tempted!!!

My 390 Duke blew the head gasket and to make me happy (or make a sale), they gave me the 1190 as a loaner...

My word!!! What a bike :D

So, on Thursday I drove from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth via Wellington and Bain's Kloof pass and then down Route 62, on a Honda CBR250R.

13 hours and 830 KMs later I finally weaved my sorry ass into PE, by this point I was seeing double, suffered two (metaphorically) broken wrists, vibrating fingers and a backside that had gone numb 300 KMs in.

Intense is not a strong enough word...

kudo's - I would be able to walk after that - and ride a fairly comfortable Shadow 1100 with screen. I have back problems so like to keep my rides under 200km a day - bit of a pansy really!

Pix of your ride!!!

I have a old Shadow 400

Yes but that's just total accidents, which makes perfect sense as there are more cars than there are bikes.

Per capita you can be damn sure motorcycles are more likely to be involves in an accident, more so all by themselves without anyone else involved.
